5. Kitsilano

Getting Around Vancouver

If you’re arriving via plane, after touching down at Vancouver International Airport, take the 25 minute trip to downtown on the Canada Line. Tickets cost $7usd one way. From there, the best way to get around town is on a bus, SkyTrain, or the AquaBus if you want to head across the water to such places as Granville Island.

The lack of a highway system within the downtown area, along with notoriously bad traffic, means it’s likely best to avoid hiring a car to reach downtown. Downtown Vancouver features museums, galleries, and the beautiful Stanley Park. It’s a happening city in its own right. But very few locations can lay claim to the sort of scenery Vancouver provides. Beyond the city are snow-capped peaks carved by years of slow-moving glaciers. The Coast Mountains which cut through British Columbia are awe-inspiring allowing visitors a wide spread of activities to enjoy. This comprehensive guide will help you uncover the best things to do in Vancouver, Canada.

1. Granville Island

Many cities have wonderful stories of old warehouses reborn to become a top attraction. Vancouver’s version of this is Granville Island. The old industrial port in the city has been replaced by a thriving arts community with restaurants and microbrew pubs, boutique shops, and entertainment. Granville Island is one of the first places you should see when visiting Vancouver.

Inside the warehouses, you’ll find art galleries featuring local artists, a boisterous dining scene and independent theaters. If you’re up for a pint, check out Granville Island Brewing Company. Granville Island is technically not an island, so you can arrive via both car and ferry.

2. Stanley Park

The most famous of all the Vancouver Parks is Stanley Park. 3. Canada Place

Not to be confused with a classic ocean-going vessel, Canada Place is a permanent structure located at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Vancouver Harbour. The pier rolls way out into Vancouver harbor, providing travelers and locals with wonderful views of the mountains in the distance and the picturesque bay.

Beyond being a cruise ship terminal, Canada Place is also the Vancouver Convention Center which hosts over 500 events each year, and The Pan Pacific Hotel. But that’s not why it’s on the list. One of our favourite places to hang out is the trendy neighborhood of Yaletown where there are chic restaurants, boutique shops, and a vibrant nightlife. Overall, False Creek offers a diverse range of attractions that are sure to appeal to visitors of all interests and ages.

7. Science World

When traveling around Vancouver, there’s a chance you may have noticed the huge metal dome structure on False Creek. What you may not know, is that it’s home to one of the top things to do in Vancouver with kids.

The family-friendly Science World features 12 interactive exhibits designed to get you thinking about how the world works. Activities range from exploring motion, water, and the history of inventions.

9. Chinatown

After passing through the impressive Millenium Gate, you’ve officially arrived in Vancouver’s bustling Chinatown. This part of the city mixes modern development with many historic buildings from Vancouver’s early years. Vancouver’s Chinatown is one of the largest in North America and is a top spot for cheap eats. The iconic Dim Sum at Floata Seafood Restaurant is a must-eat on any visit.

11. Capilano Suspension Bridge

While visiting Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver, it’s good to combine a visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Having the moniker of Vancouver’s first tourist attraction may make visitors wonder if the Capilano Suspension Bridge is outdated. Yet the city’s suspension bridge, which opened in 1889, continues to wow and thrill those that walk across the Capilano River to this day.

The 70m footbridge connects two sides of a deep canyon with the Capilano River slicing through below. There are hiking trails and outdoor adventures waiting on the other side. The bridge sees a lot of visitors, so it’s one of those attractions that is well worth getting up early for.

The Museum of Anthropology is a section of the University of British Columbia and has a keen focus on the Northwest Coast First Nations. Explore native art, large totem poles, and mosaics. 21. Explore Gastown

As the city’s oldest district, Gastown is a must-visit on your travels to Vancouver. Gastown developed on the back of legendary John Deighton. The man was a griot, a throwback to past storytellers, and quickly gained the nickname, Gassy Jack. A statue of Deighton can now be found in Maple Tree Square.

22. Kitsilano Beach

Vancouver has plenty of urban beaches and one way to soak up the sun when in Vancouver is with a trip to Kitsilano Beach. The local favorite is a laid-back location with dazzling city and mountain views. The spacious beach is popular on summer days when locals come to bake on the soft sands or have fun on the volleyball courts.

Jumping in the water isn’t so popular, but you’ll soon discover a heated outdoor pool. Once you’re done having a dip, dry off and enjoy the several walking trails through the green space, or kick back at a local cafe. You’ll also find yourself minutes from shopping on West Fourth Avenue.

23. Visit Wreck Beach

Wreck Beach has been famous for as long as I can remember. This clothing-optional beach located on the western tip of Vancouver has a wide expanse of sandy beaches and rocky sea cliffs. For those comfortable with the clothing-optional policy, it’s a great opportunity to shed your inhibitions. With regulars who have been visiting for years and are welcoming to new visitors. There’s a relaxed and friendly vibe, with people of all ages, backgrounds, and body types.

Wreck Beach also hosts a range of events and festivals throughout the year, including beach cleanups, art shows, and live music performances. These events can be a great way to connect with like-minded people and enjoy the beach in a festive atmosphere.

24. English Bay

Close to Stanley Park, English Bay is another popular beachfront that brings the crowds on sunny days. As a part of Vancouver’s West End, English Bay plays host to the Celebration of Light.

The annual festival, held in July, sees eye-popping fireworks light up the sky and live music. But on any regular day you’ll find residents relaxing under the gigantic trees, rollerblading or taking in the many public art exhibits. Like Kitsilano Beach, it’s not common to swim at English Bay. But that doesn’t stop those braving the frigid waters for the Polar Bear Swim, held on New Year’s Day.

English Bay Beach

Dave and I used to live in the West End of Vancouver and English Bay Beach was our beach. We knew it as First Beach. Because of its close proximity to the city center, English Bay Beach is one of Vancouver’s busiest beaches. From here you can see views of English Bay and the North Shore mountains. We loved this neighborhood of Vancouver with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping nearby.

The water is calm offering plenty of water sports such as SUP, kayaking, and swimming. On the shore, you can enjoy beach volleyball or this is a great spot to enjoy a picnic with that food you picked up at Granville Market.

One of the highlights of English Bay Beach is the annual Celebration of Light fireworks display (we used to watch it from our rooftop!) which takes place over three nights every summer and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. The beach is also the starting point of the annual Vancouver Polar Bear Swim, a New Year’s Day tradition in which brave swimmers take a dip in the chilly waters of English Bay.

Spanish Banks Beach

Vancouver has a lot of waterfront property and plenty of city beaches. Another popular beach in Vancouver is Spanish Banks Beach. Also located in the West End, Spanish Banks is where the seawall ends but can also be accessed by public transportation.

There are several amenities at Spanish Banks Beach, including washrooms, picnic tables, BBQs, and concession stands. The beach is also dog-friendly, with designated off-leash areas for dogs to run and play. It’s a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and beach volleyball. At low tide, the beach extends out to the waterline, creating a large area for walking, kite-flying, and exploring the intertidal zone.

25. Take a Sunset Cruise

One of the best things to do in Vancouver is to take a sunset cruise to enjoy the city’s scenic waterfront. This sunset dinner cruise takes you out from Vancouver Harbour to the Pacific Ocean to see the Vancouver Skyline and beautiful coast. 26. Christ Church Cathedral

Dave and I are not very religious, but when we travel we always tend to visit cathedrals and temples. When visiting Vancouver, we stayed true to that tradition. Christ Church Cathedral is an Anglican church dating back to 1889. Located in downtown Vancouver, it features a mix of Gothic Revival and Romanesque architectural styles.

The historic landmark of Vancouver is known for its striking bell tower, which rises 65 meters (213 feet) above street level and is one of the tallest structures in downtown Vancouver. The interior of the Christ Church Cathedral features beautiful stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and a stunning pipe organ.

27. Explore Richmond

South of downtown Vancouver, Richmond is home to Vancouver’s other Chinatown. Walking around the trendy neighborhood will bring you to several authentic Chinese restaurants ready to entertain your taste buds.

But Richmond isn’t just about food. You’ll find a beautiful Buddhist temple and discover the small village of Steveston. The beautiful area of Richmond is home to a National History Site, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. The old boat sheds were once a part of the west coast’s historic fishing industry. But are now filled with waterfront restaurants and boutiques.

28. Richmond Night Market

If you’re wondering what to do in Vancouver at night, then make your way to the Richmond Night Market just 20 minutes from the downtown core. The vibrant market is full of interesting stalls selling souvenirs and art. Naturally, it’s another great place to try some Chinese street eats at the many food stalls.

The Richmond Night Market features more than 200 vendors selling everything from clothing, to accessories and souvenirs. You can also sample a wide range of cuisines, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai, as well as more traditional festival foods like mini donuts and corn on the cob.

The family-friendly market is a great destination for adults and kids with a range of activities to keep everyone entertained from carnival attractions and games to live music, cultural displays, and plenty of food options.

31. Sea to Sky Highway

If you want to get out of the bustle of Vancouver, why not complete one of the best scenic drives in Canada? The Sea to Sky Highway is a 90-minute journey beginning in the Vancouver city center and ending at the famous town of Whistler.

You can drive the sea to sky highway in one quick shot, but we recommend taking your time road trip is packed with highlights, with stunning vistas throughout. An overnight in Squamish is highly recommended to enjoy the Pass waterfalls, sprawling lakes, and snow-capped peaks. 32. Go Skiing or Snowboarding

Grouse Mountain may be the most famous of the North Shore Mountains, but there are two other mountains that are worth visiting. Cypress in West Vancouver and Mount Seymour in North Vancouver are two year-round destinations for hiking and biking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Because of its unique geographical position, Vancouver sees a lot of rain. The upside is incredible powder and world-class skiing. If you have an extra day on your itinerary and the lifts are running, then do yourself a favor and go shred. Aside from epic ski resorts of Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain and Mt. If you only have a short time, you can even go to Whistler on a day trip. It certainly isn’t enough to see it all in one day, but sometimes you can only take what you can get. 33. Squamish

Squamish is located just 50 minutes from downtown Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway and makes for a great day trip. We love Squamish so much that we suggest making at least an overnight trip to the city. 34. Brittania Mine

A popular stop along the side of the road is the Brittania Mine. We didn’t think we’d care too much about a mine, but this mining museum is awesome. It starts with a train ride into the mine to learn about how the mine was built, you can pan for gold and see all the old buildings with interactive displays. The BOOM Multimedia show that is included with your ticket is an extravaganza that is not to be missed.

35. Sea to Sky Gondola

One of the most popular attractions in Squamish is the Sea to Sky Gondola which takes you to the top of the mountains for spectacular views of Howe Sound. Gumbo is a delicious soup cooked across Louisiana and is a must-try when visiting New Orleans. Seriously, you cannot visit New Orleans and not eat gumbo – it is akin to sacrilege. The dish contains the ‘Holy Trinity’ of Creole cooking; bell peppers, celery, and onions. And the traditional recipe is held together with thick meat or shellfish stock. Apart from these basic requirements, gumbo can vary quite a bit. There are lots of variations, including hugely popular seafood gumbo.

Gumbo is said to originate from West African cuisine. The West African sister dish typically contains okra, called ‘ki ngombo’. The name stuck and transitioned to gumbo as the dish was introduced into the New Orleans food scene. Gumbo has a strong flavor, and the stock is the most prominent flavor of the dish.

It is hearty and warm – ideal for a light meal on a cold day. It is prepared much like a stew and is stirred over medium-low heat for a prolonged period. Gumbo could take up to 45 minutes to cook and requires real patience, which many say is the dish’s secret ingredient for success.

You shouldn’t have any issues finding somewhere to try gumbo. It is sold all over New Orleans. If you want to cook it yourself, you can head to any central grocery to pick up the necessary ingredients and follow this recipe. Gumbo is low maintenance and a dream to cook and eat – what more could you ask for?

2. Po’ Boy

A po’ boy is a classic, traditional New Orleans food. The sandwich is simple to look at yet delicious, symbolizing Louisianan heritage. You’ll find it all over the state, especially in New Orleans. The sandwich is served on French bread and almost always contains some meat (typically roast beef or seafood).

A creamy remoulade sauce is generously drizzled over the meat. And, usually, you’ll get salad tossed in there as well, like shredded lettuce and tomato – but this varies depending on where you get the po’ boy. One of the most popular New Orleans foods is the cochon de lait po’ boy, which uses the meat of a suckling pig and is considered a delicacy.

The sandwich gets its name from the phrase ‘poor boy’. The Martin Brothers opened a food and coffee stand in 1922, and when the 1929 street car strikes hit, they began to offer free sandwiches to members of the strike unions. The po’ boy became a symbol of solidarity and humanity, and word of this New Orleans food spread like wildfire. The brothers were practically an overnight success.

Taste-wise, what a po’boy tastes like depends on where you buy it. Ingredients vary a lot depending on individual recipes. However, the texture always stays the same, with a mixture of crunchy fried foods and creamy sauce. A po’ boy is a real treat for the senses. The sandwich is cooked by frying the ingredients first, stuffing it, and drizzling it with sauce afterward. You’ll be able to find it all over the place, and while it was once known as a street food delicacy, many restaurants and cafes now offer it too.

3. Jambalaya

Jambalaya is a one-pot dish that, at first glance, appears much like a paella. In fact, the only things that differentiate the two are the spices used in their recipes; jambalaya favors cayenne pepper over saffron, paella’s main spice of choice. You’ll usually find at least one meat in a jambalaya – typically seafood, chicken, or chorizo. Jambalaya contains diced onion, crushed garlic, and lots of spices as well.

As you may have guessed from the paella similarities, jambalaya has influences from France and Spain. The recipe is an adaptation of paella, and its name comes from Jamalaia, a region of southern France. However, jambalaya combines creole, cajun, and European culinary influences. It can be traced back to at least 1885, and nobody knows where or when jambalaya was truly created.

Either way, jambalaya tastes delicious. The dish is a spicy mix of carbs and pungent flavors, a delicious addition to any family meal or dinner table. The mix of vegetables, rice, and meat is a classic one. If you visit New Orleans, you’ll have no difficulty finding this food. It is also a killer dish to master as a homecooked meal.

4. Boiled Crawfish

Boiled crawfish is one of the most dramatic-looking New Orleans foods. The crawfish comes whole with all body parts intact, so if you are looking for something for fussy eaters to eat in New Orleans, boiled crawfish probably isn’t it. For the adventurous amongst you, boiled crawfish is a real delicacy. It is usually served as a main alongside potatoes, corn, and garlic.

Boiled crawfish have a long and illustrious history. The dish dates back to the early 1600s. It is believed to have been a popular dish in Louisiana’s Native American tribes. These people would fish for crawfish in the local rivers, and one tribe – the Houma Tribe – even adopted the fierce crawfish as their symbol. Cajun influence then took over the boiled crawfish dish, and it became an adaptation of lobster dishes in Canada. In 1980, the crawfish was described as Louisiana’s state crustacean – a lofty, if niche, title.

Crawfish taste slightly salty and are much meatier than other crustaceans like crabs. Some people go as far as to claim that the meat tastes like a hybrid of shrimp and crab meat, but we’ll leave that for you to decide. When it comes to cooking techniques, many chefs boil their crawfish alive. However, if you aren’t a fan of that practice, you can also find places that don’t or buy your own crawfish that have already been killed. Cooking them is really simple; you just throw them into boiling hot water until cooked and tender.

5. Oysters

Oysters are saltwater mollusks massively associated with luxury dinners and suave champagne drinking. They are served in shells on ice, usually with a lemon slice for extra flavor. Of course, in New Orleans, things are done slightly differently. While you’ll still find the classic raw oysters version of the dish, oysters are also cooked in many other ways. You can find them chargrilled, deep-fired, and even in sandwiches and as an accompanying ingredient. If you think you know how to eat oysters, prepare to rediscover them entirely on a trip to New Orleans.

While we’ve been eating oysters since early human history, they outdate us. Scientists say that oysters first popped up in the Triassic period alongside the dinosaurs, and there are fossil records dating back to 145 million years ago – suggesting that this claim tracks. Oysters have a notoriously acquired taste and are known for being quite bland and slimy in texture. However, served right, oysters are one of the tastiest New Orleans foods to try. And one of the best places to try them is our recommendation; the legendary Casamentos Restaurant. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

6. Fried Chicken

Who doesn’t know and love fried chicken? This is one of the most popular foods to eat in New Orleans, and while it is famed worldwide, the city has its own stamp on the dish. New Orleans is known as a fried chicken hotspot and has some of the most options in the world. Prepare yourself for vast buckets of salt and pepper chicken.

Fried chicken’s leap to popularity is mainly thanks to KFC. Kentucky Fried Chicken opened in 1930 as a simple business operating out of a roadside motel. By 1939, Colonel Harland Sanders had created a top-secret recipe and was expanding his trade across the globe. Of course, before that, humans had been eating chicken for thousands of years, with records showing chicken consumption in Babylon in 600 BC. Fried chicken is an adaptation of classic food in society.

Fried chicken is beloved for its simple but delicious taste. It is lightly salted and has the perfect crunch from its light batter. You’ll find fried chicken all over New Orleans – even at gas stations. One of the top spots though is Willie Mae’s Scotch House. The French Quarter is also known for its booming selection of chicken.

7. Beignets

Beignets are a delectable little pastry commonly praised as a French dish. Beignets come in parcels and are dusted in powdered sugar. They taste like donuts, just puffed up with a flaky texture. Beignets are one of our top four recommendations if you are looking for a dessert in New Orleans. They use all the typical cake and pastry ingredients, including yeast, eggs, sugar, and bread flour.

The dessert dates back to the 17th century, and the fried dough itself can be traced back even further – with some claiming the Romans used to eat a form of an early donut. However, New Orleans beignets are believed to have a French influence.

It probably doesn’t shock you to know that beignets are super sweet to taste. The powdered sugar dusting gives them an added sweet kick and is an excellent choice for anyone wanting something tasty. The dessert is cooked by mixing all the ingredients in a large bowl (with warm water and yeast being the key combination), then set aside to allow the mix to rise. The dough is then cut, deep fried as little parcels, dusted with sugar, and then eaten. You can find beignets everywhere in New Orleans, but Cafe Du Monde makes a particularly tasty selection.

8. Turtle Soup

Turtle soup is pretty self-explanatory. The soup comprises turtle meat, a hard-boiled egg or two, vegetables, and a roux. It has more stew consistency than soup and is hailed as a great nutritious meal.

Turtle soup can be traced back to the 1720s and reached peak popularity by the middle half of the century. Later, due to overhunting, the dish became replaced with ‘mock turtle’ soup. However, New Orleans remains one of the only pockets where you can still try turtle meat – as long as it isn’t from a turtle on the endangered list. Rather than green turtle (which was traditionally preferred), terrapin is much more commonly used.

Turtle meat has a pork-like flavor and texture similar to chicken or crab. It is said to be pretty nice on the taste buds, so turtle soup may well be on the cards if you feel like a challenge. Turtle meat is usually parboiled and then added to the soup. It is a delicacy, so don’t rule it out when visiting New Orleans.

9. Praline

What are pralines? Only the signature sweet of New Orleans. This piece of confectionary is a pecan-based, brown sugar-covered candy. Likened by many as a nuttier version of fudge, it is a definite must-try when visiting New Orleans. And if you are reading this for home recipe inspiration, it is worth buying some online to try if you don’t fancy giving the recipe a go.

A praline is made up of a mix of pecans, brown sugar, white sugar, cream, and butter. Rather than overly chewy, they have a slightly creamy texture – which is absolutely melt-in-you-mouth, trust us. The sweet treat was introduced to the city by the French in around 1727. Some suggest that pralines were specifically bought over by Ursuline nuns, although this is unconfirmed either way.

Pralines are sugary and nutty tasting. Nothing you wouldn’t expect. You cook pralines by reducing the sugar over medium heat into a golden caramel, mixing it with the other ingredients, and then leaving the pralines to harden. The New Orleans praline is a must-try food; luckily, that should be easy to tick off because you’ll find praline everywhere.

10. Bananas Foster

Get ready for another delicious dessert. Bananas foster is one of the most popular (and sweet) New Orleans foods. The dish is a hurricane concoction of vanilla ice cream, butter, brown sugar, dark rum, banana liqueur, and actual bananas. The bananas are cooked and served with vanilla ice cream on the side and a drizzling of super sweet, mildly alcoholic sauce. Voila – bananas foster.

Bananas foster gets its name from Richard Foster. Richard Foster was a chairman of the New Orleans Crime Commission. He was much appreciated by the residents and business owners of the French Quarter as he tackled crime and improved life quality. In recognition of his efforts, Chef Paul dedicated a new dish (bananas foster) to him in 1951. The dessert has lived on since.

Because of its history, the best place to try a bananas foster is in the French Quarter. If you are visiting New Orleans, plan to sample the best banana fosters in this region. And if you want to experience some of the darker histories of the city, the history that Richard Foster helped move firmly into the past, then head on a New Orleans horror tour.

11. Barbecue Shrimp

Barbecued shrimp isn’t just an Australian thing; barbecue shrimp is a New Orleans specialty. Of course, there is just one significant difference, in New Orleans, ‘barbecue shrimp’ refers to the sauce used to cook the shrimp, not the actual grilling process. You’ll find the shrimp coated in a yummy smoky sauce.

The unofficial story of the birth of New Orleans’ barbecue shrimp is that the recipe was invented in Pascal’s Malae restaurant in the 1950s. A customer is said to have come in and told the chef about a specific type of shrimp they’d tried in Chicago. Not to be outdone, the chef whipped up a similar dish for him – which the customer proclaimed was even better. And so, barbecue shrimp was born.

You’ll find barbecued shrimp of all varieties, including BBQ shrimp po boy. Gulf shrimp is usually the meat of choice and are found all around the coast of the US and Mexico. The best-barbecued shrimp uses fresh gulf shrimp, so keep an eye out for the freshest deal.

12. Red beans and rice

Red beans and rice may sound basic, but this dish is to die for. This dish is one of New Orleans’ creole dishes and is ultra-traditional – even though it is mainly eaten on Mondays. This tradition comes from Mondays being typically laundry days, and beans could be left to simmer relatively unattended. Often ham bone uneaten from Sunday dinner was also used in the dish as leftovers. The beans are served alongside rice and mixed with vegetables like bell peppers, onion, and celery. Spices like thyme, cayenne pepper, and bay leaf also give the dish a kick.

The food dates back to the 19th century and was most common amongst large families with lots of leftovers and mouths to feed. It is believed that the meal was influenced by Spanish Caribbean migration. However, it’s unclear exactly how much of the recipe should be credited to the Spanish Caribbeans or New Orleans of the time.

The dish has an earthy, slightly sweet quality, balanced by the salty meat of the ham. Red beans remind many of sweet potatoes in taste; the texture is smooth since the beans are mashed into a paste. The cooking process is simple, with the rice boiled and the ham only reheated. The beans are left to simmer for a prolonged period, sometimes up to 2.5 hours. The result is a really thickened and creamy texture.

You may find red beans and rice at certain restaurants in New Orleans. However, the dish is much more of a home-cooked meal. We suggest researching restaurants in advance or trying to recreate them yourself.

13. King Cake

Let’s first just establish that king cake is an absolute masterpiece. The cake is specially cooked for Mardi Gras and comes covered in the three colors of the festival – yellow, green, and purple. If you are visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras, it would be a crime not to try a slice or two of king cake. The cake is a unique but tasty mixture of coffee cake and a cinnamon roll, and it comes served in a colossal doughnut shape. Of course, the crucial part of the dessert is the tiny plastic baby hidden in the mixture. Traditionally, the person who finds the baby in their slice has to bring the king cake for the following year.

The history of the king cake comes from the Biblical story of the gifts from the three kings to baby Jesus. Unsurprisingly, the dessert is believed to originate from Christian and predominantly Catholic countries. Many eat the cake as part of the Epiphany celebrations. New Orleans chooses it as a staple dish of Mardi Gras.

The cake is sweet and colorful to look at. The flavors of coffee and cinnamon stand out, as does the topping (usually icing sugar). King cake tears easily and has a cinnamon roll consistency but remains light and fluffy in texture. The cake is baked in the oven using ingredients like eggs, sugar, and flour. The ring shape is essential as it symbolizes the king’s crown, so a special baking tray is typically used.

14. Chicory Coffee

Chicory coffee is one of the most fascinating coffee alternatives on the market. The beans are ground from chicory root, not coffee beans, and are praised for their lower levels of caffeine and high amounts of insulin. Chicory coffee is even becoming a point of research for gut health as a prebiotic.

Chicory coffee is said by many to originate in France during an 1800s coffee shortage. However, the coffee alternative took a steep rise in popularity in New Orleans a little later, in the Civil War and during Union naval blockades. While nowhere near as popular as standard coffee, chicory coffee is still drifting around in New Orleans. If you feel like trying something new, it’s definitely worth a go.

While chicory root is bitter, the preparation of chicory coffee dispels that completely. The root is ground and roasted at high temperatures to achieve the perfect taste. The final result is an intense nutty flavor. It is famous for a good reason, so if you are on the fence, we suggest giving it a go. Who knows, maybe it will be your new signature drink? And if not, it is certainly one for your bucket list.

15. Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is a super sweet classic and absolutely beloved New Orleans food. This is one of the tastiest dishes to eat in New Orleans, and while it is popular in the US, it is somewhat of a global dessert. Bread pudding consists of (originally stale) bread, milk, cream, eggs, and a sauce. It is an absolute guilty pleasure, and if you’ve never tried it before, prepare to fall head over heels for this food.

The bread pudding was initially created as a way to avoid wasting stale bread. The dish dates back to the 11th century and used the soaking cooking method to combat the dry, hardened texture of the bread. As you may have guessed, it was popular amongst the lower classes looking to save a few pennies creatively. However, the love affair for bread pudding quickly spread; nowadays, everyone loves a serving.

Bread pudding has a super sweet taste and is soaked overnight in eggs, sugar, and milk before baking. As an extra touch, some people even add dashes of bourbon or raisins and spices for an added kick. The dessert is light, fluffy, and perfect for those with sweet teeth. You’ll be able to find it in restaurants across New Orleans. However, it is a great recipe to master at home, too -super straightforward.

16. Andouille Sausage

Andouille sausages are a French food; just a large, smoked pork sausage. Visually, Andouille sausages look pretty similar to chorizo sausages. However, Andouille is much bolder in flavor and uses chopped or sliced meat instead of minced meat. It is typically used as an ingredient in Cajun dishes like gumbo rather than a standalone meal. However, it is such an iconic part of New Orleans cuisine that we had to include it on our list.

Where Andouille sausages come from is a bit of a mystery – despite the dish’s French label. Some people query the French claim of this dish and suggest that it has German origins instead. Others reassert that it is indeed French and indicate that it was created to stop wasting meat by butchers in Brittany and Normandy. Either way, it was introduced to New Orleans by European influences.

Andouille sausages are well-seasoned and have a distinctive smoky flavor. You will find them most easily by visiting a butcher or trying a local dish like gumbo which has them as a main ingredient. If you are brave, you could try to make them yourself, although that isn’t a mission for the faint-hearted.

The first thing I recommend is that you take a classic American car tour around the city, and take in the contrasts. This is a super way of getting an overview of greater Havana and experiencing firsthand the different ambiances of the city districts. 

The second is to do a guided walking tour of the historic Old Havana (La Habana Vieja). Learn about the rich historical details of colonial Havana, revolutionary Havana, and Che Guevera. Make sure you visit the Plaza de la Catedral, Bodeguita del Medio (where Hemingway hung out), and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza.

My third recommendation is to book a table for dinner at Paladar San Cristobal (where Obama had dinner) or the rooftop terrace at fantastic La Guarida, both in Central Havana. Ask for a chambre separé in San Cristobal if you are a group, it will be an amazing evening. At La Guarida, stroll over to the other end of the restaurant after dinner for a nightcap at the amazing rooftop bar with stunning night views of Havana.

2. Feel Authentic Cuba In Guanabo Town

If you like to experience the authenticity and uniqueness of a destination when you are traveling, then one of the best places to visit in Cuba is Guanabo.

Located just half an hour’s drive east of Havana along the coastline, Guanabo is a typical Cuban small town. It is not free of tourists, but it is a destination much less traveled than Havana or Varadero. There is a myriad of bars and small restaurants with random self-appointed DJs along the main street of Guanabo. 

Stop for a mojito in one of the roadside bars, and buy a typical Cuban lunch in the park next to La Esquina de Los Caballitos (bring cash) along with the rest of the locals. Then head for Guanabo Beach, where on the weekend each cluster of sunbeds houses a family with their subwoofer playing either reggaeton or salsa while sharing a bottle of rum with everyone!

Take a day trip to Guanabo, or opt for staying here for a night or two if you want a more authentic Cuban experience than partly polished Old Havana. You will find casa particulares for rent in Guanabo across the spectrum from simple standard to luxury, while experiencing a truer vibe of what Cuba 2023 is like, including the nightlife!

3. Basque In Turquoise Waters At Playas del Este

Playas del Este is a chain of small beaches lying like beads on a chain spread out to the east of Havana city. Lots of Cubans come to Playas del Este to enjoy the sand and sea, especially during the weekends. The closest beach to Havana is the small bay of Playa Bacuranao, while the most beautiful one according to lots of travelers, is Playa Santa Maria del Mar. 

On the latter, you can expect lots of life and hustle and bustle, especially on the weekends, from kiosks selling everything from traditional chicken with rice, rum, and ice cream while playing music at the nightclub level. 

Guanabo town is within walking distance of the eastern beach of Playa Boca Ciega, as well as Playa Guanabo. Playas del Este are the best beaches to visit on a day trip from Havana. You can take the bus from Parque Central, hail a private taxi to tend to you all day, or even book a beach trip as an organized tour online. 

4. All-Inclusive Heaven In Varadero

In 2019, Varadero Beach was voted forward as the second most beautiful beach in the world on TripAdvisor. For anyone longing for a true Caribbean holiday with crispy white sand and blue oceans, resorts, and pools, this is one of the top places to visit in Cuba. 

The sandy string of beaches follows along the entire coastline of the narrow Hicacos Peninsula stretching into the sea off Cubas’s northern coast.

The peninsula is mainly the home of numerous large pampering all-inclusive resorts filled with swimming pools, restaurants, and spas along the coastline, only steps from the white sands and the sea. There is a small town center where you find restaurants, an artisan market, a variety of shops that you can enjoy, and even a mall built in the 90s, weirdly named Plaza America.  

Varadero is perfect for a Caribbean getaway with swimming, snorkeling, boat trips, scuba diving, or simply soaking up some sunshine, and there is a golf course with spectacular proximity to the Caribbean surf. 

You can also go exploring nearby caves, visit the Botanical Garden, a natural reserve, or venture out deep sea fishing! 

Just know that if you stay in a Varadero resort for your entire vacation, you have not really visited Cuba, as the real Cuba is very different. So it is really great that Varadero is within tour distance to other destinations in Cuba, like Vinales, Havana, Trinidad, and Cienfuegos. Check it out. 

5. Lush Green Valle de Viñales & Cuban Cigars

Mainly famous for being home to the coveted Cuban cigars, Vinales is a small agricultural town in a lush green fertile valley located in the western part of Cuba, in Pinar del Rio province. 

You can take a day trip to Valle de Viñales from Havana, and even from Varadero (although that is a really long day) and experience the highlights of the valley. See the Mural de la Prehistoria, the stunning Cueva del Indio cave, visit a Cuban cigar farm, and have a traditional Cuban lunch – all in one day! 

If you have time to travel slower, you can also stay a night or two in a casa particular in the small but charming Vinales town center. 

There are a variety of unique restaurants and bars for you to explore offering traditional meals with local ingredients and delicious Cuban food like ropa vieja or pollo con arroz morro. There is one special thing about Vinales that has put the valley on the UNESCO World Heritage site list, and that is the mogotes. Scattered around the valley small abrupt hills are lying like green sugar tops across the valley floor; the mogotes. 

Mogotes are isolated, steep-sided, and rugged hills composed of limestone, marble, or dolomite, with rounded shapes that tower above the flat plains around them. 

If you stay a while, you will have time to go on hikes to explore the mogotes up close, some of them have caves where you can go swimming or rock climbing inside. 

Or try rock climbing on the outside, walk the many trails around the valley, go horseback riding, and visit the nearby limestone caves. Maybe visit the pristine beaches on Cayo Jutias up north on a day trip?

6. Ruggedly Untouched Island Cayo Jutias

Cayo Jutias is a beautiful island you can reach by driving north across a causeway on the verge of Pinar del Rio province, off the northwest coast of Cuba. 

Here you find nothing but a quiet beach with a narrow strip of crispy sand separating the mangroves from the soft sea. 

You can take a taxi up to this tranquil island for the day (there are no hotels here), a couple of hours from Vinales. It is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway, with stunning beaches, clear blue waters, and simply chill. 

Most travelers immediately fall in love with the pristine rugged beauty of Cayo Jutias. Unlike other destinations in Cuba, the untouched Caribbean beaches here have not been developed like Varadero or some of the other Cuban keys. 

There is a restaurant and a couple of bars on the beach where the prices are decent for cocktails and sandwiches. Spend the day snorkeling, swimming or simply doing nothing on the beach before you return to mainland Cuba in the afternoon. 

7. Sustainable Las Terrazas in Pinar del Rio

Las Terrazas is a picturesque, serene community that focuses on sustainable development in Pinar del Rio, and allows its visitors to become one with nature. 

Located 46 miles west of Havana, this tranquil oasis is situated in the Sierra del Rosario which was appointed a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985. In the late 1960s, Las Terrazas was created to restore an area that had been severely damaged by extensive coffee production in the 19th century. 

Millions of trees were planted, terraces for agriculture excavated, and a small town was constructed to keep nature as its focus. Now the land is protected rather than exploited; its cycles are respected and appreciated in perfect harmony with nature.

Las Terrazas is one of the destinations in Cuba that has attracted a vibrant community of talented artists. It also provides an incredible outdoor setting for nature enthusiasts from open public workshops and studios to unlimited opportunities for outdoor activities.  Spend the day in the beautiful river oasis, with layered cascades running from one level to another of crystal clear pools where you can take heavenly dips in the waterfalls. 

From the lush vegetation of the Sierra del Rosario mountain range, you will also find stunning viewpoints, and tropical mountain scenery around Las Terrazas, where you can gaze at the hazy coastline!

8. Colonial Living Museum Of Trinidad

Trinidad is often referred to as “the museum of Cuba”, a unique colonial city located on Cuba’s southern shores around four hour’s drive from Havana. 

The reason Trinidad is protected by the UNESCO World Heritage Site list is that its historical center looks almost identical today as it did at the height of Cuba’s sugar era when Trinidad was the sugar capital of the island. When Cuba was priced out of the sugar trade by other nations, the city became a forgotten backwater, a place that was not developed like other Cuban towns in the 19th and 20th Centuries. 

Trinidad today is one of the most famous places to visit in Cuba for its well-preserved colorful colonial buildings and cobblestone streets. Here historic telltales from the colonial era in the Caribbean and Cuba are found in the details. 

Visit one of the countless museums(don’t miss the Museum of Colonial Architecture aka Museo de Arquitectura Colonial) and artist’s studios in Trinidad’s historic center, walk around Plaza Mayor at nightfall, and enjoy a meal on the balcony of Los Conspiradores opposite Casa de la Musica. 

Travel the short distance to the Valle de Los Ingenios, or Valley of Sugar Mills, once home to vast sugar plantations. From Trinidad, you can also explore the Topes de Collantes national park, or simply head out to paradisiacal Playa Ancon beach just 15 minutes from Trinidad town center.

9. Cienfuegos City With The French Heritage

The special thing about Cienfuegos is that it is the only city in Cuba that was founded by the French, not the Spanish (although under the Spanish crown).  

A small town located on the southern coast of Cuba just west of Trinidad, the heritage of Cienfuegos is detectable in architecture and even city planning. You find a miniature version of the Arc de Triomphe in the main city square; Parque Jose Marti. 

Along Boulevard avenue in Cienfuegos is a variety of shops and small restaurants, and when the Boulevard closes, the Paseo del Prado wakes up. This is where the Cienfuegos nightlife is found, as the sun sets, the doors and windows open along the Prado and the music starts. 

You can also visit attractions like the amazing botanical garden, or go kayaking or horseback riding outside the city. And then head out to Camila’s restaurant out on Punta Gorda, across the Malecon, for an amazing sunset and dinner.

10. Infamous Bay of Pigs & Playa Giron

The Bahia de Cochinos, more commonly known as the Bay of Pigs, and the small village at Playa Giron beach are the destinations in Cuba that were the center of dramatic world events in 1961. 

The failed US invasion of Cuba happened here, where more than a thousand soldiers landed on the beaches, where they were defeated by Cuban forces, and ended up being prisoners of war for over a year in Cuba. 

Today Playa Giron is a sleepy little village on the edge of the deep Bay of Pigs. It is worth a visit because of the Bay of Pigs Museum, which tells the story of Cuba before the revolution, as well as the failed US invasion from a Cuban standpoint.  

There are also a variety of restaurants and bars in the area, so you can enjoy local Cuban cuisine for lunch or if you stay the night. After visiting the museum and the small market, there is not a lot more to discover here. 

If you head further north to Playa Larga you can check out some of the best diving on the island. With 17 different types of coral and great visibility, you will want to visit this place if you want to explore the underwater world.

11. Heart Of The Revolution Santa Clara City

Santa Clara is a small city located in the central part of Cuba about two hours north of Trinidad. It is home to a university, and possibly the scene of the most important incident leading up to the Cuban revolution in 1959. 

This is where Che Guevara and his men defeated Batista soldiers in December 1959 in a dramatic fight, before conquering the city, which led to president Batista fleeing the country on New Year’s Eve. Today this is one of the places to visit in Cuba with the most memorabilia, monuments, murals, and signs about the revolution all around, including in the main plaza Parque Leoncio Vidal. 

Santa Clara is also home to the last resting place of Che Guevara; he has been honored with a huge mausoleum on the verge of the Plaza de la Revolución. Santa Clara today also has a decent nightlife, lots of casa particulares, and a variety of restaurants and bars. After hiking to the top of La Loma hill to watch the sunset you can enjoy tasty Cuban dishes for dinner in this living and breathing museum of the revolution in Cuba.

From Santa Clara, there is about a one-hour drive north to Cayo Santa Maria, one of the paradisiacal Cuban keys that exist only for all-inclusive resort life.  

12. Secluded Paradise Island Cayo Santa Maria

Cayo Santa Maria is the name of a stunning island triplet, and part of the most famous places to visit in Cuba, the Cuban keys. Located off the north coast of Cuba, it lingers just where the Jardines del Rey coral reef system starts; the King’s Garden. 

To get here, you need to cross over a causeway on the northern coast of around 28 miles before you arrive at the island mangroves, hiding a secluded paradise consisting only of amazing all-inclusive resorts and luxury. 

In Cayo Santa Maria, there is no city center or local inhabitants, the whole island triplet is a resort heaven. A holiday here really is the place you go for the Caribbean paradise getaway, and only that. 

What there is an abundance of in Cayo Santa Maria, is beaches, pools and pool bars, food, mojitos, and lots of water activities. It is a perfect place to go snorkeling, take a day trip on a catamaran, scuba diving, and even deep sea fishing from Marina Gaviota.  

You can visit other parts of Cuba from Cayo Santa Maria like Santa Clara and Trinidad, but be prepared to cover some distances for other adventures. 

13. Paradisiacal Beaches And History In Cayo Coco

Cayo Coco is another stunning Cuban key located off the north coast of Cuba, the most famous one of the Jardines del Rey coral reef system, from where you can also reach tiny Cayos Guillermo, Paredon, and Cruz. You need to cross another long causeway across the Bahía de Perros (Bay of Dogs) to reach Cayo Coco and Guillermo, as the keys are connected to the main island of Cuba by a 17-mile pedraplen. 

These beautiful islands are known for stunning beaches and crystal clear waters, the five most famous beaches on Cayo Coco being Playa Los Flamencos, Playa Prohibida, Playa Larga, Playa Colorades, and Playa la Laula. 

There are of course plenty of water sports to do on Cayo Coco, including amazing diving in the Jardines del Rey, and kite surfing. On dry land, you can also go rock climbing at the Rocarena Climbing Center, or take a jeep tour.  Cayo Coco is also an all-inclusive resort territory, the only exception is Sitio La Guira where you can rent rooms in a very special historic environment. 

Sitio La Guira is an enthralling ecological and historical area where you can explore the region’s myriad biodiversity while traveling back in time. Learn about the culture, customs, and lifestyle of its early colonists here during the 1900s.

14. Capital Of The Carnival Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba today is the second biggest city in Cuba, situated on the eastern side of the island. The distance from Santiago de Cuba over to Haiti is shorter than to the capital Havana.  

For a few decades centuries ago, Santiago was the formal capital of Cuba, and today it still holds the title capital of the carnival in Cuba. Although most destinations in Cuba have a carnival, they are not like the one in Santiago. 

The city is famous for its incredibly energetic and abundant carnivals every year in July, and Santiago also has a bit more Caribbean influence from the islands further east because of its location. 

Some unique sights in Santiago are the majestic El Morro fortress guarding the narrow entrance to Santiago bay, San Pedro de la Roca Castle a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, which is the last resting place of Cuban national hero Jose Marti, as well as Fidel Castro. 

Santiago is also the birthplace of the 26th of July Movement, the name of Castro’s resistance group, which was founded after a failed attack on the Moneda Barracks in Santiago in 1953. 

After this attack, Castro was sentenced to jail and spent several years incarcerated in a jail on Isla de la Juventud which is now the museum you can visit on Isla de la Juventud. Santiago de Cuba also has some famous restaurants like the Bodeguita del Medio on the main street, where they serve killer Camarones (shrimp). 

15. Biodiverse Isla de la Juventud

Isla de la Juventud, or the Isle of Youth, is the second largest island in the Cuban archipelago (there are around 4000), situated in the Caribbean Sea south of western Cuba. It is one of the destinations in Cuba that are the trickiest to visit. 

The capital city is Nueva Gerona, which is more like a village with a few casa particulares, bars and restaurants, and some museums. There is only one hotel on the island, 

Particularly famous for exceptional scuba diving sites, it is also close to the southern coral reef outside Cuba, the Jardines de la Reina. Make the journey from the main island port of Batabanó in about three hours, and you can experience amazing scuba diving off the southwestern tip of Punta Francés. 

Isla de la Juventud is also a paradise of biodiversity protecting endangered species such as crocodiles, parrots, sharks, and turtles. One spectacular sight on Isla de la Juventud is the Presidio Modelo, the iconic prison-turned-museum where Fidel Castro was imprisoned after the failed attack in Santiago de Cuba in 1953, an eerie-looking place today. 

Isla de la Juventud is not for city lovers, this is a destination for travelers who enjoy venturing off the beaten tracks, find weird stuff fascinating, and love to explore nature reserves and wildlife.  

16. Vast Mountain Range Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is a vast mountain range east of Santiago de Cuba, starting by the sea and stretching inland. The area has several national parks like Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra and Parque Nacional Pico Turquino. 

Pico Turquino is also the highest point of the Sierra Maestra and the highest point in the whole of Cuba with its 1974 meters above sea level. A great destination in Cuba for avid hikers,  and nature lovers who will be rewarded with amazing views of the mountains and the sea after a trek up here. 

Visitors can also explore its many trails, breathtaking waterfalls, and panoramic mountain views. Sierra Maestra is home to a variety of unique wildlife, and more than 80 bird species, so make sure to keep an eye out for native birds and other animals! The Sierra Maestra is also famous for being Fidel Castro’s secret guerilla hideout in the 1950s. 

17. Fidel Castro’s Secret Headquarters Comandancia de la Plata

Comandancia de la Plata possibly is the most intriguing of all destinations in Cuba you can visit. This was Fidel Castro’s hidden jungle headquarters in Sierra Maestra in the 1950s, and it still looks the same today. 

Here Fidel Castro and his comrades ran their resistance campaign and guerilla warfare against Batista in the last years of the 1950s, before the Cuban revolution. Here he hid for long periods, made plans, and prepared for attacks. 

Today there is a small museum here telling some of the stories of people and incidents that happened during the 50s. You will also be able to see the secret house of Fidel Castro, where he ate and slept – and even his outside toilet. 

A fascinating destination you can reach on a day trip from Santiago de Cuba, a few hour’s drive and a short but hot and steep hike from where the road ends in the mountains. 

18. The Secluded First City Baracoa 

Situated on the eastern tip of Cuba, Baracoa is where the first Spanish colony was founded in Cuba and is known as the “Ciudad Primada”, or “First City”, the first place in Cuba to be visited by Christopher Columbus. The town lies along the Bay of Honey, and has a lush tropical rainforest climate, while surrounded by a mountain range shielding it from inland Cuba.  

Before the Cuban Revolution, you could only travel to Baracoa by boat, but in the 1960s a 120-kilometer-long road known as La Farola was built to connect Baracoa with the interior of Cuba. 

Having been protected from crowds of tourists by the remote location, Baracoa has a tranquil vibe untainted by over-tourism. Unique things to do in Baracoa today are the hike to the El Yunque mountain, and visit the city cathedral and the Parque Independencia. 

Also check out the Cueva del Paraiso which is an archeological museum with artifacts from the indigenous Taino culture, Casa de la Trova (house of troubadours), or rent a bike to explore on your own.

Palazzo Talamo

Palazzo Talamo is where we stayed in Positano and it did not disappoint. This mid-range hotel had an incredible outdoor terrace where we enjoyed our morning coffee and sunset cocktails.

This hotel has been family run for 3 generations. It is an excellent location and you can take the nearby steps down to the beach. It was within walking distance of restaurants and we could pick up wine and cheese at the nearby markets. We drove to Positano, and they arranged parking for us at a nearby parking lot with valet parking. So, we just asked them to bring our car when we needed to go for a drive along the Amalfi Coast.

It was cheaper than the other rooms in Positano with a view, but the room itself was very basic. We definitely paid for the view, and it was worth every penny. Hotel Punta Regina is so beautiful that it really deserves a spot with our luxury hotels. Still, its prices are so reasonable that we had to add it to our mid-range section. There’s also a panoramic terrace where guests enjoy breakfast each morning.

Best time of year to visit Positano?

The best month to visit Positano is in May. May is much quieter than the hotter summer months when the area becomes packed with tourists enjoying the summer holidays. It is a fantastic shoulder season as you still benefit from warm temperatures without the stifling heat and crowds.

If you can’t visit in May, we recommend choosing September. Like May, September is a shoulder season and has fewer crowds. While still warm enough to enjoy the beach, it is also slightly cooler. You can get involved with activities without battling the heat.

How much time do you need in Positano?

You can always use more time in Positano. We suggest a minimum of three days to really appreciate the area. With three days, you can spend a day relaxing in Positano, visiting Capri, and visiting Pompeii – the region’s two major draws.

Capri is a small island off the Amalfi Coast and definitely worth visiting. There are plenty of things to do on Capri, including visiting the Blue Grotto. Pompeii is a famous Roman town that was wiped out by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The impact preserved the town and essentially turned the residents into statues, attracting tourists from all around the world today.

If you have longer, definitely stay for around a week in Positano. In a week, you can relax more and settle into that Italian pace of life. Plus, you’ll be able to climb Mt Vesuvius, visit Herculaneum (Pompeii’s sister site), and explore more spots on the Amalfi Coast.

Banff and Lake Louise are two communities within the National Park and both make for a great base. With an area of 6,641 square kilometers (2,564 square miles), it is a massive protected area and UNESCO World Heritage site. Choosing the best things to do in Banff can be a challenge, so these are our suggestions of things we think you should not miss when visiting Banff, Alberta.

Banff Town itself is actually quite small and but the surrounding national park, which is the oldest of Canada’s National Parks, is where this region comes alive. A lot of the sights here are known around the world, like Moraine Lake, the world-famous Lake Louise, and the Columbia Icefield to name a few.

Be sure to purchase your national park pass in advance. Rangers do ticket the parking lots and there are no exceptions. You can purchase it at the kiosks on Highway 1 as you enter the park, or order it in advance online.

1. Lake Louise

Lake Louise is the most popular attraction in Banff National Park. Tourists flock here in droves in the summer months to paddle a canoe on the pristine emerald lake and take in the beauty of the Victoria Glacier which feeds Lake Louise itself. We recommend the shoulder seasons here to avoid crowds. Mid-summer it can get overwhelming with all of the people. Lake Louise in Winter

As with most sights in Banff National Park, the world-famous Lake Louise can be visited year-round. In the winter Lake Louise freezes over and you can rent skates to do some ice skating on the world’s most beautiful skating rink.

3. Moraine Lake

You cannot come to Banff National Park and not visit Moraine Lake. Canadians know this lake as Lake Moraine was made famous as the photo on the back of our old $20 bill and let me tell you it is a sight to behold.

It is not far from Lake Louise and is just an hour’s drive from the town of Banff. The best time to visit Moraine Lake is definitely at sunrise. When the sun hits the Valley of the Ten Peaks and reflects off of the mirror-like lake you know why this is one of the most photographed locations in North America.

Unfortunately, since the change in rules for 2023 (see below) accessing Moraine Lake for sunrise is not possible via the Parks Canada Shuttle. You will have to find a tour that has access to do this. If you ride a bike or take an organized tour you can visit Lake Moraine for sunrise.

After grabbing your sunrise shot we do suggest hitting the hiking trails. There are so many great trails in this area, but you should at least do the Moraine Lake Shore Trail. It is only 2.9km long, easy, and offers some of the most incredible views of the Canadian Rockies in the park. Most people stick to the Rockpile Trails, but you will often find this one less busy. New Moraine Lake Rules

Please note that as of Summer 2023, you can only access Moraine Lake via the shuttle service from the Lake Louise Area, with Roam Transit, or other commercial transportation. This will cost $8 for adults, seniors $4, and kids aged six and under are free. It is recommended to book in advance on the Parks Canada Website. Parking at the Lake Louise Lodge is recommended or there are also shuttles available from the Lake Louise area. 

No private vehicles are allowed on the road to Moraine Lake or the Parking Lot unless you have a disabled tag. There are daily shuttles from the Lake Louise Park-and-ride

4. Lake Agnus Tea House Trail

The Lake Agnus Tea House has been serving tea since 1905 and is one of the more popular hikes in Banff. The Lake Agnes Trail which starts at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise on a paved path that takes you along the north shore of Lake Louise with stunning views of the Victoria Glacier to the Lake Agnes Tea House.

The Lake Agnes Tea House itself was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1901 as a place where hikers could stop and rest as they hiked to see the turquoise lakes of Lake Louise and Lake Agnus. In 1905 it started serving tea and hasn’t stopped since. Read more about the best hikes in Banff

4. Banff Upper Hot Springs

The Banff Hot Springs is the most famous natural hot springs in Banff, and you can even rent an old-timers bathing suit to feel like you are in a bathhouse of the roaring twenties. This is also one of the cheaper things to do in Banff at just $10-15 CAD.

Not far from the Banff Gondola, is the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Located at an elevation of 1585 m the views of Mount Rundle and the surrounding valley are to die for. Couple that with soaking in the natural mineral water springs that are kept at a comfortable 98-104 F and you have a perfect afternoon activity.

5. Take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain

One of the top things to do in Banff is to take the gondola up to the top of Sulphur Mountain. The views from here really make you appreciate the location and beauty of Banff. There is a restaurant at the top and a fun interactive museum. There are also viewing platforms to take in different views of the Canadian Rockies and the Bow River Valley below.

Once at the top of the gondola, you can take a short hike out toward the summit of Sulphur Mountain on the boardwalk. You will be rewarded with stunning views over the Bow River Valley as well as the surrounding peaks. The gondola ride itself is pretty expensive at $62 CAD per person, but you can definitely spend half a day up at Sulphur Mountain to get your money’s worth.

6. the Legendary Fairmont Hotels

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs Hotels are the Grand Dames of Banff. The old hotels were originally built for CP Rail passengers connecting Canada and have transformed over the years into luxurious properties. Even if you are not staying in these hotels, they are worth stopping in for a look.

Both hotels were founded by the Canadian Pacific Railway to attract tourists to the West. They have been renovated over the years and are a luxurious experience in Banff.

Banff Springs Hotel

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is not far from Downtown Banff and makes for a great base. It is also close to the Gondola, Upper Hot Springs, and Cave and Basin. From here it’s easy to take a hike to the Bow Falls Lookout to view Bow Falls. Book a night to stay here for dinner or just stop in for a coffee.

Chateau Lake Louise

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is located directly on Lake Louise and you can enjoy all its amenities like ice skating on the lake in winter or canoe rentals in the summer. We always pick up a coffee at the Fairmont Lake Louise to take with us on a hike around the lake. But we highly recommend booking a night in this historic hotel.

7. Johnston Canyon

Walking the path through Johnston Canyon is one of the most exciting things to do in Banff. You can do this year-round and it takes on a whole different feeling in the different seasons. We loved doing the Johnston Canyon Ice walk in the wintertime.

The full walk of Johnston Canyon in the winter will take you to six different frozen waterfalls and a deep pool of swirling water that is reached by walking through a stone arch. It is a winter wonderland like you’ve never seen.

Johnston Canyon is also beautiful in the summer as well. The trail features iron walkways overhanging the canyon, which offer some great views. There are two trails at Johnston Canyon and we suggest doing both.

The Upper Falls, where at the end of the trail you are rewarded with the magical scene of the falls plunging down into a pool that is surrounded by the canyon walls. And the Lower Falls which puts you right down in the canyon itself, with magnificent walls surrounding you as well as the falls.

The hike itself is pretty moderate and is about a 5 km round trip. If you are driving the Bow Valley Parkway, then make sure to add this to your itinerary.

8. Sunrise or Sunset at Vermillion Lakes

Vermillion Lakes is a series of three small lakes located in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. These lakes are known for their stunning views of Mount Rundle and the surrounding mountains. This is a very popular destination for watching sunrise and sunset.

The best time to see the sunrise or sunset is during the summer months when the days are the longest, and the sun rises early and sets late. It is also important to check the weather forecast, as the view can be obscured by clouds or fog. It is also a good idea to arrive at Vermillion Lakes early, at least 30 minutes before sunrise or sunset, to secure a good viewing spot and to take in the peaceful atmosphere of the area.

Vermillion Lakes has several scenic viewpoints and walking paths that offer panoramic views of the lakes and mountains. Some popular spots include the Vermillion Lakes Drive, which offers views from the road, and the Vermillion Lakes Trail, which offers views from the shore of the lakes.

9. Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is located just outside the town of Banff and makes for a great day tour. You can enjoy the hiking trail around the lake, or get on the water. It is a relatively large lake at 27km long making Lake Minnewanka the perfect place to take a cruise. It gives you a great insight into the history of the area and is the perfect way to appreciate the beauty of this lake.

For those who are a little more adventurous, we suggest hopping on one of the many hiking trails that surround Lake Minnewanka. Some of our favorites are the Lake Minnewanka to Devil’s Gap trail and the hike to Stewart Canyon.

If you don’t have a lot of time here you can take a drive along the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Derive, which takes you right along the edge of the lake before making its way back to the town of Banff. This is one area of Banff that you don’t want to miss.

10. Cave and Basin National Historic Site

The Cave and Basin National Historic Site is a really cool experience in Banff. It was the original Banff Hot Springs. This national historic site takes you on a tour through a cave towards an underwater hot spring.

Unfortunately, you can’t swim in the spring anymore, but it is amazing to walk on the path to the original hot pool. Cave and Basin National Historic Site was where the Canadian National Parks system was born. It was the discovery of this original spring that lead to Banff being a protected area.

11. the Bow Valley Parkway

There are a couple of drives you shouldn’t miss when visiting Banff and the Bow Valley Parkway is one of them. Located off the Trans-Canada Highway this two-lane scenic drive offers some spectacular viewpoints. There is the Castle Mountain Trail, Johnston Canyon, and the famous Morant’s Curve.

Morants Curve is a popular spot for photographers. If you time it right, you may have a photo of a train coming around this famous curve. If you are looking for an alternative way to explore Banff National Park which is not the typical highway that everyone takes, the Bow Valley Parkway is the perfect road to take. This scenic drive is great in both the summer and winter

12. Downtown Banff

When looking for things to do in Banff, there are plenty of things to do downtown. Cascade mountain towers over this beautiful town creating a picture-perfect scene that is famous around the world. This world-class destination is unique in the fact that it sits inside the national park. Most people base themselves in downtown Banff to experience all the great things to do in Banff Nationational Park and for good reason.

Downtown Banff has a great food scene, terrific shopping, and hotels that can be a little easier on your budget than staying at places like the Fairmont Lake Louise. Don’t miss taking in some of the local cultures at the Whyte Museum and the Mount Royal Hotel which has a small museum inside and a great art display outdoors.

13. Drive the Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway is one of the most beautiful drives in Canada. It starts in Banff National Park and takes you to some of the most incredible scenery on earth. It ends in Jasper National Park with a stop at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center at the mid way point. You can drive The Icefields Parkway in one day, but we suggest giving yourself 2 and spending some time in Jasper as well. On the drive you’ll see bighorn sheep, you may spot grizzly bears and you’ll have awe-inspiring views of glaciers. Check out all the things to do in Jasper here.

Make sure to take time to enjoy its views and be sure to stop at the Columbia Icefield Visitor Center to enjoy views of the Athabasca Glacier. There is a restaurant and you can book tours to see the Glacier Skywalk, Athabasca Glacier and Columbia Icefield.

The drive itself starts in Lake Louise and heads north for 293 km. It passes turquoise lakes and high lookouts with famous stops such as Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, the Athabasca Glacier, and the Glacier Skywalk just to name a few.

You can rent a car in Banff and we highly recommend it for having the freedome to see all the top attractions. Not only will you be able to experience cool things to do in Banff but you will also end your journey in the beautiful Jasper National park where you can explore the Sunwapta Falls, Lake Annette, and check out the incredible Jasper Park Lodge.

14. Bow Lake

Bow Lake is probably one of our favorite places to visit when we are in Banff. Located along the Icefield’s parkway and fed by the Bow Glacier, Bow Lake is a picturesque stop you won’t want to miss.

It is a great stop when driving up to Jasper National Park from Banff and we suggest hiking along the shoreline, or taking the Bow Glacier Falls Trail in the summer and getting yourself some snowshoes in the winter. You can then drop into the Num-Ti-Ja Lodge to grab a drink or to take in the history of the area.

We recommend spending a little time here if you are really into hiking. The hike up to Bow Glacier Falls not only takes you around the lake itself it offers spectacular views of the valley and you are rewarded at the end with the beautiful scene of Bow Glacier falls. It is a relatively easy hike and well worth it.

15. the Athabasca Glacier

The Athabasca Glacier, which is part of the Columbia Icefield is the most-visited glacier in North America. Every year thousands of people flock here to get a chance to walk on the famous glacier and witness the beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Located around the halfway point of the Icefield’s parkway between Banff and Jasper, the Athabasca Glacier is one of those things to do in Banff that you can really brag about.

But we suggest jumping on a tour that takes you out to walk on the glacier, gaze into crevasses, and feel the power of mother nature beneath your feet. There are a couple of options, a 3-hour tour, and a 5-hour tour, depending on how much time you have and how fit you are. It does take an average fitness level but it is an experience you will never forget.

16. Hit the slopes at Lake Louise Ski Resort

IOne of the best things to do in Banff is to hit the slopes and go skiing or snowboarding. Banff has 3 ski resorts (Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Norquay) that are relatively close together and the conditions here are ideal.

The most famous of all the ski resorts in Banff is Lake Louise. This is the premier ski destination in Alberta and when you see the views surrounding you on the slopes you know why. Lake Louise hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and its world-class slopes have terrain for everyone from beginner to expert.

Soaring mountain peaks surround you as you enjoy the over 400 acres of skiable terrain on the 10 chair lifts. The trails here cater to all levels and if hitting the slopes is what you love to do then we suggest adding the Lake Louise Ski Resort to your list.

Lake Louise Gondola

In the summertime take the Lake Louise Summer Gondola is open for wildlife viewing. It is one of the best places to safely view grizzly bears. But you may also see black bears, lynx, moose, elk, and mountain goats. You can book guided hiking tours,

17. Sunshine Village Ski Resort

Sunshine Village is only a 30-minute drive from downtown Banff and is usually the first to get snow, so it naturally has the longest ski season. It has 12 Chairlifts and over 3000 acres of skiable terrain, making it perfect for every level of skier or snowboarder.

When we snowboarded here we stayed right on the mountain at Sunshine Mountain Lodge which has Banff’s largest hotel hot tub so, after a day on the boards, we could soothe your aching muscles in the tub. Not a cheap option but definitely worth it if you want to splurge.

In the summertime, Sunshine village transforms into one of the premier hiking destinations in the park. There are so many hikes in this area, that you will want to give yourself a few days to explore a few for yourself.

18. Norquay

If you are looking for family ski resorts in Banff, Norquay is an excellent choice. Norquay is the closest ski hill to Banff Town and is great for a day trip or for families.

If you want to try something different, head over to do some snow tubing. It’s the ultimate couch potato thrill ride. You ride the magic carpet to the top, let them put you on the tube, and push you down the hill. All you have to do is hoot and holler all the way down!

19. Via Ferrata at Mount Norquay

Besides skiing and snow tubing at Mount Norquay, try your hand at its Via Ferrata. This thrilling and unique climbing experience allows visitors to scale the rugged cliffs of the Canadian Rockies while safely harnessed to steel cables and iron rungs. This guided climbing route is perfect for both novice and experienced climbers, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The Via Ferrata route at Mount Norquay is a multi-pitch climb and the route is divided into several sections, with each section offering a different level of difficulty and challenge. Climbers are outfitted with a harness, helmet, and climbing gear, and are attached to the steel cables at all times, ensuring maximum safety.

As climbers ascend the mountain, they are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the Banff Town, the Bow River Valley, and the snow-capped peaks of Rocky Mountains. The climbing route also includes several suspension bridges and a heart-pumping freefall swing.

20. Helicopter Tour over Banff National Park

If there is one helicopter tour that you do in your life, do it over the Rocky Mountains. It’s even better to see them in winter. Dave and I have had the privilege of taking scenic flights on 6 continents, but our flight over Banff National Park offered the most breathtaking views of our lives.

Seeing Banff National Park in winter from above was the most striking scene we’ve ever witnessed. The peaks covered in snow looked like the perfect winter wonderland. Each pass offered one magnificent view after another. Rockies Heli uses are state-of-the-art helicopters with bubble windows and plenty of space to give everyone the best possible views.

21. Snowshoe the Rocky Mountain Trails

We killed two birds with one stone during our helicopter flight with Rockies Heli, by booking the Heli Snowshoe experience. We landed on a mountain peak and hiked through the trails showcasing extraordinary mountain views.

We’ve done a few snowshoeing experiences in Banff, and this one was by far the best since it started at altitude and we were already high in the mountains. Nothing could compare to these views!

22. Take photos of the Starry Nights in Banff

Winter in Banff is the best time for night photography. The days are short so you can find dark skies as early as 6 pm.

The nights are clear revealing the milky way and the Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights). Banff is known for its dark skies and places like Vermilion Lakes, Lake Minnewanka, and Bow Lake are just a few places to capture the imposing night skies.

We recommend jumping on a tour as it gets you to the best places at the right time. This sunset and stars tour is great as it runs year-round.

22. Mountain Biking

There are mountain biking trails for all skill levels in Banff. Ride on everything from single tracks to easy riverside rides. There are plenty of places to bike rentals and gear in both Banff and Lake Louise.

23. Dog Sled to British Columbia

There’s only one place you can go dog sledding in Banff National Park and that is with KingMik Dog Sled Tours. Their team of dogs is fast and filled with pep and zip as they run through the Great Divide Trail all the way to the border of British Columbia.

As you are snuggled up inside a warm sleeping bag and zipped into the windproof canvas, you glide through the forest looking for lynx tracks while your guide tells you about the area, the dogs, and the scenery. On the way back, it’s your turn to drive the sled and you’ll feel like a true explorer as you mush through the old Trans Canada trail.

24. Stay in a Back Country Lodge

If you ever make it to the Rocky Mountains, you must make sure to go to a backcountry lodge. This is the epitome of things to do in Banff in winter. Why? Because it is where you completely get away from it all. Don’t fret too much about bears or cougars in the winter.

For the most part, they’re hibernating and if you are a party of two or three, they’ll be more afraid of you than you are of them. Imagine sitting in a log cabin heated by a wood-burning stove as the snow falls around you outside.

That is pure heaven. Sundance Lodge has an executive chef, hot water for showers, solar power, and cozy bedrooms. This is where luxury meets rustic living and if you go home and tell everyone that you trekked 16km into the Rocky Mountains to stay at a lodge, you will be the hero of all your friends. You can get to the Banff Alberta Back Country by snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

25. Take Sleigh Ride

The Fairmont Lake Louise offers sleigh rides along the edge of Lake Louise in the winter taking you out to the base of Victoria Glacier. It’s a beautiful ride through the forest offering mountain views and a romantic experience. Sip hot chocolate as your driver takes the reins and tells you the history of Alberta and Banff.

26. Visit Park Distillery

Park Distillery is a standout for drinks and dinner in Banff. Located in the heart of downtown Banff, Park Distillery produces a variety of handcrafted spirits using only the finest natural ingredients. You can book a tour for a look into their on-site working distillery.

One of the standout features of Park Distillery is that it is one of the few distilleries in the world to use 100% mountain glacial-fed water in its production process. This pristine water source comes from six glaciers high up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and is piped directly to the distillery, ensuring that the spirits are of the highest quality and taste.

In addition to the tours, Park Distillery has an on-site restaurant that serves up delicious, locally sourced food, much of which is prepared using the same glacial-fed water used in the spirits. The restaurant features an extensive cocktail menu that showcases the distillery’s spirits in unique and creative ways.

27. Spot wildlife in Banff National Park

Great skiing, hiking, and outdoor activities are not the only things that Banff is famous for. A lot of people flock to the park to catch a glimpse of its abundant wildlife.

You are almost guaranteed to see deer wandering around the town of Banff itself, but if you are looking for the best wildlife experiences we suggest heading into the park to have the best chance of wildlife sightings.

Grizzly bears, wolves, and cougars are all in the park and you be able to see one if you are lucky and patient. We found that by going up to Jasper National Park we saw more wildlife than in Banff. Up there we saw plenty of elk walking through Jasper Park Lodge, two grizzly bears and bighorn sheep on the side of the road and mountain goats in the distance.

If you are looking at upping your chances of seeing wildlife in Banff then we do suggest jumping on an organized tour. We took the Banff Highlights and Wildlife tour and saw quite a bit of wildlife that I know we would not have seen if we were just on our own.

28. Two Jack Lake

First off, Two Jack Lake offers breathtaking scenery. The lake is surrounded by towering mountains, lush forests, rolling hills, and crystal-clear waters. Whether you prefer to take a leisurely stroll around the lake or explore the surrounding hiking trail, the views from Two Jack Lake are gorgeous.

The lake is a popular destination for paddling and picnicking, and there are several nearby hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you prefer to relax and take in the views or to be more active, Two Jack Lake is sure to leave a lasting impression.

The lake is located just a few kilometers from the town of Banff, and it is easily accessible by car or bike and there is ample parking available near the lake.

29. Ice Climbing

One of the most adventurous things to do in Banff is to go ice climbing. Did you know that you can go ice climbing eight months of the year around Banff and Canmore, Alberta?  The town Canmore is located just outside Banff National Park in Alberta between Calgary and Banff and you can book ice climbing tours with experienced guides at Yamnuska Mountain Adventures.

30. Enjoy the Food Scene in the Town of Banff

The Town of Banff has an excellent food scene. Nothing beats Alberta Grade A beef, so head out for the night and try some local cuisine. Most eateries serve farm-to-table and ingredients are all locally sourced.

Hotels in Banff

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs hotels are definitely high on the list of places to stay if you have the budget. Located right next door to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is Deer Lodge and we found this to be excellent to explore the famous Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.

But Sunshine Mountain Lodge at Sunshine Village has Banff’s largest hotel hot tub located right on the side of the ski hill where after a day on the boards, you can soothe your aching muscles in the tub. We also stayed at Deer Lodge located right next door to the Fairmont Lake Louise and it was excellent.

If you want to stay in the town of Banff, Buffalo Mountain Lodge and Fox Hotel and Suites are great options. And for a romantic winter getaway in a luxurious yet rustic cabin complete with a fireplace, we recommend Storm Mountain Lodge.

The shuttle drivers are knowledgeable and can provide information about the area and its attractions along the way.

Most of the attractions of Yellowstone National Park are located directly off Grand Loop Road with the stars being the Grand Prismatic Spring, and Upper Geyser Basin featuring Old Faithful and Morning Glory Pool. Grand Canyon National Park is the most famous of all the national parks in the USA, and it lives up to the hype. I didn’t expect it to take my breath away but the Grand Canyon truly did. Standing at the south rim overlooking the Colorado River felt like we were staring into a huge photograph.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Grand Canyon National Park encompasses 1,218,375 acres and the Grand Canyon is 6000 feet deep at its deepest point. It is massive. Grand Canyon national park is a mecca for whitewater rafting down the Colorado River But there is also hiking, horseback riding, waterfalls, and the Grand Canyon Skywalk for panoramic views.

The Grand Canyon visitor center is located on the south rim and park rangers are on hand to answer any questions. There are three main sections of the South Rim to explore, The Rim Trail, Hermit Road and Desert View Drive. 3. Yosemite National Park – California

Oh Yosemite National Park, what can say about this mother of all US national parks? Yosemite was first put on our radar in college when we bought an Ansel Adams print and said “I want to go there one day.” His black and white images of Yosemite Valley and Sequoia Tress inspired Dave’s photography and when we finally did visit, Dave recreated many of his favorite scenes by Ansel Adams.

Zion National Park is the star of Utah’s National Parks. It was the first of Utah’s national parks and one of the most beautiful national parks in America thanks to its incredible rock formations. It’s no wonder it is the second most visited national park in the USA.

There are five national parks in the state known as the Mighty Five and we are going to cover a few more in this post. The others are Bryce Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Canyonlands National Park.

Things to do in Zion

If you only have a short time in Zion National Park, take the free shuttle bus to stops along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. But this is a national park that requires time. From canyoneering to rock climbing and horseback riding to hiking, Zion National Park has plenty to keep the adventurous busy so we suggest staying overnight nearby.

5. Denali National Park – Alaska

Alaska is the final frontier of the United States and the place to really be able to experience Alaska with ease is in Denali National Park. This is one national park for the bucket list. We have had the luxury of visiting Denali National Park three times and each time it surprises us with something new.

From incredible grizzly bear spottings to Denali sheep looking on from high mountains and taking a scenic flight over Mount Denali to see the mammoth 6190 meter high (20,310 feet) mountain from above.

With a whopping 6 million acres of preserved wilderness, Denali National Park houses the highest peak in the Americas. Believe it or not, Denali isn’t the largest park in the entire National Park System, that trophy goes to another Alaskan national park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve.

6. Glacier Bay National Park – Alaska

Glacier Bay is a spectacular national park spanning 3.3 million acres of untamed wilderness, massive glaciers, and temperate rainforest. Seeing this beauty by ship is something everyone should add to their bucket list. With an abundance of wildlife, whale and bald eagle spotting is a daily occurrence.

Best Way to See Glacier Bay

If you want to even go more remote in Alaska, you can visit the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. It is the least visited national park in the USA and for good reason. It’s located way up in Northern Alaska and the only way in is by flying. We haven’t visited this yet, but we’ve come close at Innuvik National Park in Canada.

The only way to see this spectacular park is on a cruise. We have visited this bay on three different occasions with a Princess Cruise, Holland America Cruise, and a small ship cruise with UnCruise. Each time we see it, it never disappoints.

7. American Samoa National Park – American Samoa

Well, American Samoa may not be in the United States proper, but we must include it in our round up because it is the second least visited national park in America. It is the exact opposite of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. Located way down in the South Pacific, we had the chance to visit this national park while on a South Pacific Cruise.

8. Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Tennessee and North Carolina

Going from the least visited of US National Parks, it is fitting to go to the most visited national park in the US. One would think that Yellowstone National Park would be the most visited National Park in the USA, but surprisingly the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America. It seems that Yosemite or even Grand Canyon National Park would have more visitors, but when you think about it, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park makes sense.

In fact, it was the first national park in America that I ever visited. Many a snowbird makes their way to Florida crossing through the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. It was during our annual pilgrimage from Canada to Florida that my family stopped to see Great Smoky Mountain National Park and millions of others have done the same.

9. Isle Royale National Park – Michigan

Before we move on to more traditional US national parks, I have one more of the least visited national parks in the USA to share with you. Isle Royal is located way up north near Canada in the middle of Lake Superior. Dave and I have had a lot of chances to explore the shores of the largest of the Great Lakes and going out to the islands of Lake Superior is a very special experience. It is one of the most remote national parks in the USA offering a true wilderness experience for visitors. It has an array of wildlife that includes moose, wolves and beavers.

10. Dry Tortugas National Park – Florida

While we are on the subject of remote national parks in the United States, Dry Tortugas in Florida, just might be the most isolated. Located (113km) 70 miles from Key West in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, The Dry Tortugas can only be reached by boat or sea plane. It is an easy day trip from Key West with tours leaving daily.

It was used as a fort between 1845 and 1876 to defend during the Spanish American War. You can take a day trip out to explore the island and beautiful sandy beaches and you can even camp overnight on Garden Key. Read more: Things to do in Key West

11. Haleakala National Park – Maui

Moving from one remote American destination in Alaska to the center of the Pacific Ocean, we take you to Haleakala National Park on Maui. Meaning, the House of the Sun in Hawaiian, Haleakala National Park is only 47 sq miles, but is a little slice of heaven.

13. Joshua Tree National Park – California

Joshua Tree National Park is the coolest of the cool. Located 2 hours East of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree NP is where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts meet. The park came by its name from the early settlers in the 1800s who named the strange-looking trees that graced the landscape after a bible story.

The trees reminded them of Joshua raising his hands to the sky in prayer. These slow growing trees are hundreds of years old and fascinating to look at. But there is a lot more to do in the park with some fantastic hikes, scrambling through rock formations and climbing and bouldering. 14. Death Valley National Park – Nevada and California

Death Valley National Park is the hottest and driest national park on earth. In fact it is the hottest and driest place on earth period. With an elevation of 282 feet below sea level, it is also the lowest point in all of North America. Death Valley National Park is beautiful, but man it is hot!

Make sure you have plenty of water and stay covered when visiting this national park where 110 degrees is the norm. But it certainly goes higher reaching 127 degrees. With a lunar landscape spanning 3000 square miles (7800km) Death Valley National Park can be deadly.

Death Valley National Park got its name from a group of pioneers called the 49ers who perished while trying to cross this desolate stretch of land. 15. Everglades National Park – Florida

Want to spy on the elusive Florida panther? The cute as a button manatee? Or what about the American Crocodile? I said it, not an alligator, a crocodile? This 1.5 million acre wetland preserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere. The best way to explore it is by paddling, but there are hiking and biking trails too.

16. Badlands National Park – South Dakota

Located in South Dakota, the Badlands are a spectacular sight. With an area of 242,756 acres this national park is one of the most photogenic in the country.

Filled with sharp pinnacles and blunt buttes, the landscape is like something out of this world. The great thing about this national park is that you can see a lot of it by road and there are plenty of hiking trails located right from the parking lot.

Follow the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway to take you through some of the best scenery in the area. There are several hiking trails leading out to jaw dropping overlooks

There are two sections to Badlands National Park. The North is the more popular portion run by the National Parks Service. It has the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway and the top hiking trails in Badlands National Park. The South is managed by the Lakota Sioux People and there are no hiking trails or park services. Roads are not paved and it is much more rugged.

This beautiful national park surprised us. We expected Badlands to be desolate and dry, but it was filled with color and texture making it one of our favorite national parks in America. 17. Sequoia National Park – California

Welcome to the land of giants at Sequoia National Park. The world’s largest trees grace the scenic groves of this park. You can drive through the park via the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, but to get out and walk the hiking trails among the giants is awe inspiring. The General Sherman Tree is considered the largest tree by volume

There are other things to see in Sequoia National Park too. Go underground to see the Crystal Cave or take the high ground to the top of Moro Rock for views of the Western Divide.

Its trails were unlike others because of the mossy trees from the damp rainforest.

Yellowstone is often described as a geothermal playground, and it’s the best place to experience geothermal activity in the US. In our opinion, the world. We’ve been to a lot of geothermal areas on earth and this places blew our minds.

Yellowstone is one of the best places to visit in the USA to experience the power of nature. You can watch the geysers explode, the most famous of which is Old Faithful. You can also hike to Yellowstone’s hot springs, including Grand Prismatic Spring which is popular because of its eye-catching colors. 15. Grand Canyon National Park

Visiting Grand Canyon National Park is a dream for most, and it is easily one of the best places to visit in the US. This natural wonder is the most famous canyon in the world. Created by the Colorado River carving through the Grand Canyon over millions of years.

The Grand Canyon is known for its stunning views however, there are also plenty of amazing things to do in and around the Grand Canyon. Zion is one of the best places to visit in the US for a desert experience and has incredible hiking trails with eye-catching natural attractions. The Great Arch, Kanarra Falls, and Angels Landing ridge are all fantastic spots to visit.

Zion NP also has some impressive canyons. The Narrows is the most famous section of Zion Canyon, and its hiking trail leads you through the bottom – which is just 20 to 30 feet wide. Pack water shoes and shorts as in some parts, you’ll be wading through the Virginia River.

Yosemite National Park is also brilliant for skiing – so head to a spot like Badger Pass if you want to learn or show off your skills. The park is a 263,000-acre area situated around Mount Rainier, a dormant supervolcano and Washington’s highest peak. Experienced climbers can tackle the mountain on guided climbs. However, there are plenty of entry-level hikes in the national park for those who lack the experience to tackle Mount Rainier. Trail of the Shadows, Rampart Ridge Trail, and Twin Firs Loop Trail are all popular hikes.

Mount Rainier National Park is the perfect place for climbers and hikers in the pacific northwest. If you want to experience an alpine, glacial landscape but stay in a major city, it is the best option for you.

22. Olympic National Park

The park is easily reached from Seattle by car or ferry. You could grab breakfast at Pike Place Market and then be in Olympic National Park before lunch. Just plan an itinerary and what you’d like to see first, as the park is nearly 1 million acres in size.

23. Death Valley National Park

As the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in the US, Death Valley National Park sure collects titles. The park stretches into Nevada and California, just west of Las Vegas. It is primarily a desert landscape, although it has several colorful mountain ranges and ridges.

If 1 million acres sounded big, try 3.4 million acres for size. Death Valley is worthy of a multi-day trip. However, you can see lots of the park in a single day since its main attractions are relatively close. The best places to visit in Death Valley are Badwater Basin salt flats, Titus Canyon, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Zabriskie Point, and Ubehebe Crater.

Death Valley National Park is a great day trip from Las Vegas. You can reach the park in around two hours from Las Vegas. 24. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua tree national park is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. This unique desert landscape covers more than 1200 square miles. The park is made up of a unique and diverse ecosystem that feels almost out of this world as two different ecosystems come together.

This is a desert oasis full of ancient Joshua trees and unique rock formations. Drive through the cholla cactus garden as you take photos of the breathtaking landscape. Admire the famous skull rock as you take in the beautiful scenery. If you’re lucky you might even spot some wild animals. Coyotes, hawks, eagles, hummingbirds, big-horn sheep, and gray foxes are quite common at the park.

Lots of hiking and hiking trails are available for all ages. Plan to spend a whole day there to take in all that the park has to offer. Denali National Park is one of the biggest in the US. While it narrowly missed out on being included in our top 40 best places, there is no way that we couldn’t have this park in our runners-up.

At 6 million acres, it’s safe to say that Denali National Park can keep you entertained for a while. The park is located in Alaska, way up in North America. The national park surrounds Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, and features beautiful glacial and forest landscapes. Denali National Park is an excellent US destination if you want somewhere to head off the beaten track.

Denali National Park is famed for its wildlife, with grizzlies, black bears, wolves, caribou, and moose to spot. You can try to spot wildlife by driving through the national park yourself or opt for a backcountry safari. If you are lucky, you may even see the Northern Lights at night.

26. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains are a wonderful place to connect with nature and challenge yourself to outdoor activities. The park covers over 500,000 acres. You can camp, hike, fish, and climb for a day or two weeks – the Great Smoky Mountains are a versatile US destination to visit.

The best things to do in the mountains are to hike up Clingmans Dome (the highest peak), visit Sky Center, hike to Laurel Falls, and test your bravery at Smoky Mountains Ziplines. Just remember to leave no trace and keep your holiday as ethical and sustainable as possible.

Acadia National Park just missed out on our top ten best national parks to visit in the US. However, the 47,000-acre park definitely deserves an honorary mention. It is home to wildlife like moose and bears, a rugged coastline, and Atlantic flora. Acadia is a beautiful US destination if you want to experience natural beauty on the Northeast Atlantic coast.

The national park is split between Mount Desert Island and mainland Maine. There’s plenty to do, from adventurous cliff walks like Beehive Trail to boat tours to spot puffins.

28. Miami Beach, FL

Miami Beach is a coastal resort island connected to mainland Miami by a series of bridges. While Miami Beach has one long coastline, it is split into multiple beaches. Our favorite (and the most popular) is South Beach.

South Beach is the playground of the rich and beautiful, regularly frequented by models and celebrities. Even the beach facilities are beautiful, with art-deco lifeguard towers and day beds.

Once you’ve finished at the beach, you have restaurants, bars, and attractions to choose from along the promenade. A day out at South Beach combines wining, dining, shopping, and beach time.

29. Corolla Beach, NC

Horse lovers, this beach is the best for you. Corolla Beach is home to the only surviving herd of wild Spanish Mustangs in the world. As long as you stay a safe distance away, you can get amazing views of the herd that lives on the beach and grassy dunes.

Apart from the horses, Corolla Beach is quiet and relatively untouched. There are limited facilities except for the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, a charity, and a conservation museum educating and fundraising for the local horses.
