Part of the Niagara Escarpment, Manitoulin Island offers some amazing nature experiences, incredible hiking trails, cultural experiences, and more. Here are our top picks for what you can’t miss when visiting Manitoulin Island.

The view from the trail on Manitoulin Island

One of the greatest adventures to be had on Manitoulin Island is to hike the Cup and Saucer trail. The Cup and Saucer hiking trail is the quintessential hike of Manitoulin Island. Heck, it’s one of the Quintessential hikes in all of Ontario! It starts in a parking lot off the main road, and within a couple of hundred meters (600 feet or so) the steep rocky climb begins. Beginner hikers may find it challenging, but stick with it, the payoff is worth the climb up roots, over boulders, and through the muddy trail after a rainy night. We didn’t expect the views to be so staggering.

The main trail is approximately 4 kilometers long, with an additional 2 kilometers of side trails, including the popular Adventure Trail that takes hikers along narrow cliff edges and through unique rock formations.

Best things to do in Manitoulin Island Cu and Saucer Trail

Climbing up to the second lookout took us up 70 meters (210 feet). The star of the show is the overhanging rock plunging into the valley below. Looking over the escarpment, lakes, and wetlands is a sight that will take your breath away. We could have spent hours taking photographs of the view.

The trailhead for the Cup and Saucer Trail is located on Highway 540, approximately 18 kilometers west of Little Current. The trailhead and parking lot are on the north side of the highway, and there are signs marking the entrance. The physical address is 9110 Highway 540, Sheguiandah, ON P0P 1W0, Canada.

A signature experience of the Great Spirit Circle Tour, this was so much fun to do. We have our drums on display in our house and it is a very interesting way to learn about the indigenous culture while making your own take-home souvenir.

The drum is the heartbeat of Mother Nature. Drum and we learned that song is used for many occasions: As a prayer, as a celebration, or just plain having fun! We listened to our guides Steven and Falcon sing as they played us different songs for different purposes while pulling the deer hides over our drum frames. There is something mesmerizing about listening to the vocal stylings of these talented performers as they are accompanied by their drums.

    Habitats of Parc Omega

    Parc Omega Wolf Cabins Habitats

Something we love about Parc Omega is how it has recreated landscapes to mimic the animal’s natural habitats. Serge Lussier who specializes in conservation, helped to design a lot of the habitat within the park. He said that he wouldn’t bring an arctic animal to Parc Omega if they didn’t have a habitat for them.

There is the Arctic Tundra for Arctic animals and wide open plains for the bison. The mountain goats were perched atop a high rocky hill and looked right at home. Since mountain goats normally live at high altitudes, this is a good alternative for them to live out their days.

    Parc Omega Wolf Chalet

    Parc Omega Wolf Lodge Chalets

Nestled within the pristine wilderness of Parc Omega in Quebec, the wolf cabin offers an unparalleled retreat into the heart of nature, providing an immersive and intimate encounter with one of the most mysterious and majestic creatures of the forest – the wolf.

The Wolf Lodge at Parc Omega is not your typical accommodation. The wolf lodges are log cabins made of wood and glass, providing a cozy and intimate atmosphere while also offering panoramic views of the wolves as they roam freely in their habitat. The cabins are insulated and have heating for the colder months, as well as air conditioning for the summer.

    Parc Omega Wolf Cabins Interior

There is a comfortable bed, a bathroom with a shower, and a small kitchenette for preparing meals complete with a dining table, microwave, refrigerator, Nespresso coffee machine, dishes, and towels. So make sure to pack food and wine. You’ll be nestling in for the evening for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The highlight of the cabin, however, is the large glass window that offers an unobstructed view of the wolves.

Parc Omega Wolf Lodge Seating Area

Staying in a wolf cabin is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the beauty and power of these animals up close, all while being in a safe and controlled environment. Each accommodation option (Wolf Chalet, Wolf Lodge, or Wolf Cabin) is located in the same complex, they are just different buildings that cater to different groups.

Watching the Interaction of Wolves From Our Chalet

We spent the night in a log cabin in the middle of the wolf sanctuary where a pack of wolves spent the night howling, running around, sleeping, and playing in front of our private glass observation room.

During the day, you can go for a walk along the boardwalk to observe the wolves from above. At night, you can hear the wolves howling, providing an authentic and unforgettable wilderness experience. It was amazing to watch the alpha male dominate the pack. It was very clear to see the nuances of the wolf pack with the Alpha male and Alpha female looking strong and healthy and the others falling into line down to the scruffy omega.

    Parc Omega Wolf Cabin Platform

My heart broke for the poor Omega wolf who was constantly being bullied or ignored. Even during the wolf howl in the middle of the night, we noticed that it wasn’t allowed to join in. We could tell it wanted to so badly, but it knew it couldn’t. It really lived up to all of the hype and is an experience we recommend you don’t miss.

    Other Accommodation Options

    Parc omega tent accommodation

There are other more affordable options from booking a night in a tent or tipi. Wi-Tents are the ultimate glamping experience with beds and seating inside a large conical tent. There is wood heating, an outdoor fire pit, and solar energy for lighting.

There is an organic toilet and water for drinking. But the best thing about this accommodation is that you’ll have access to the footbridge to view the wolf and bear enclosures.

    Pod Village

Another option for accommodation is to stay in one of the pods in the village. They are not located in the wolf enclosures so you won’t be seeing the wolves at night, but you will still hear the sounds of the park and you will be able to enjoy the activities that happen after the sun goes down.

Pods have electricity, heating and air, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. Kids will love sleeping in the mezzanine bed that acts as the ultimate bunk bed. They are also near the Old Farm which is a great place to visit with kids.

    Par Omega Wolf Lodge View

    Stilt House

Families will love staying in the stilt house. It sleeps 7 people with full beds and bedding to rent if you don’t want to bring your own. We just suggest packing a sleeping bag. Like the tents, it has an organic toilet, an outdoor fireplace, and solar energy for lighting.

This also gives access to the wolves’ and black bears’ footbridges to observe them in their natural habitats.

    Wolves and Bear Suite

Just new and officially opened in September 2023 is Parc Omega’s new Wolves and Bear suite. This time you get the best of both worlds. You have your option of the one or two-floor suites. These cabins are pure luxury with modern decor, fireplaces, and even an outdoor fire pit. They are strategically placed so you can see both the bears and the wolves up close. The two-floor unit even has a balcony for incredible views. It is important to note that the bears are hibernating from November to April so it will just be the wolves during this time.

Regardless of which type of accommodation you choose, you will have a great time. You can check out the prices for all the accommodations right here.

Great Canadian Safari – The Wildlife Of Parc Omega

    Parc Omega Wolves Arctic

Visiting Parc Omega is like going on a safari. We have been on safari around the world and this is very similar. The other animals are in large enclosures and roam freely. They can walk right up to your car so be prepared. Sometimes the deer and caribou can get a bit aggressive when trying to eat carrots, so make sure to keep moving.

You can go around the driving trail as many times as you like to see the different animals. Do not get out of your car except for at designated areas.

Parc Omega Wolf Cabins Arctic Foxes

Arctic Foxes: Our favorite part of Parc Omega was definitely the Arctic enclosures. We enjoyed seeing the arctic animals in the wintertime more than our other visits. They seemed completely in their element when a blanket of snow was on the ground. WE had seen arctic foxes in northern Canada but it was nice to get a more up and close view of them.

Park Omega Wolf Cabin Experience Arctic Wolf

Arctic Wolves: Seeing wolves is one thing in life, having the chance to see beautiful Arctic wolves is another. These wolves were very curious when we stopped to see them. They kept their distance, but they posed beautifully for our camera. Did you know that the Arctic wolf is a sub-species of the Gray wolf? You can also learn a lot about the wildlife while you are here.

    Parc Omega Elk

Elk: A great time to visit Parc Omega is during the rutting season when male antlers have reached their full growth. WE saw a few males with their harem of females. They are such beautiful animals that I think we spent 20 minutes just watching them.

    Parc Omega Wolf Cabin Caribou

Caribou: Reindeer are called caribou in Canada, but if you are visiting Parc Omega with kids, call them reindeer, they’ll love it! What I always found interesting about these animals is the size of their hoofs. They are huge, a nd help them walk through the snow in the winter, which is the best time to see them in my opinion.

    Parc Omega Wolf Cabin Coyotes

Coyotes: Until I saw coyotes in the wild, I never really understood just how large they are. They can easily be confused with wolves, but they are a bit smaller. One way to tell them apart is to look at their ears, they are pointier than a wolf. We loved seeing the Coyotes in the fall when the leaves were yellow and orange. What a magnificent backdrop for these beautiful animals.

We could go on and on listing the wildlife of Parc Omega as there are also walking trails that take you through different habitats, where you can see animals such as wild boars, raccoons, and beavers.

However, it is one of the greatest nearby beaches to visit. Dr. Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park is home to sea turtles and even manatees in its neighboring canal. If you want a beach experience with reserve-style wildlife, it is the place to go from Miami.

    8. South Pointe Beach

Best Beaches in Miami South Point Beach

The sandy shores of South Pointe Beach make up one of the best beaches in Miami. Situated dramatically at the end of the Miami beach strip, South Pointe Beach has stunning views of the outstretched high-rises. It is a popular spot for scenic sunrise seekers. It also has an excellent security and lifeguard presence, making it a hit amongst families and solo travelers wanting peace and quiet with some safety in numbers.

It is just a 20-minute drive or 35-minute public transport journey to reach South Pointe Beach from central Miami. But if you stay in the Miami Beach region, you can just walk there.

    9. Bal Harbour Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Bal Harbour Beach

Bal Harbour Beach is super scenic. It is a mix of stunning white sand – a classic feature amongst Miami beaches – and a backdrop of skyscrapers and palm trees. Bal Harbour Beach stretches up to the Haulover Inlet and Haulover Inlet Bridge, and there’s a beautiful fishing pier at the end for anyone wanting to catch a catch. Clean and relatively quiet, this more out-the-way beach day spot is just a 45-minute drive from central Miami or 20 minutes from Miami Beach. Bal Harbour Beach stands out for its quiet fishing culture and inlet-side location. It is definitely a rewarding spot.

    10. Hollywood Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Hollywood Beach

Forget flashy LA Hollywood; Florida Hollywood is different. This area is nicknamed ‘Old Florida’ and has a beautiful boardwalk, classic resorts, and a few golf course options. It has an old-world allure, and this action centers around its vast stretch of sandy shoreline. Hollywood Beach is where to connect with coastal Florida differently, making it one of the best Miami beaches.

To reach Hollywood Beach, it is around a 40-minute drive from Miami. It is located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, making it more of a day trip-style beach since you’ll be traveling to get there. If you drive from Miami Beach, it is a stunning route, though, and you can stop off at other beaches like Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles along the way.

    11. Matheson Hammock Park

Best Beaches in Miami Matheson Hammock Park

Matheson Hammock Park is a beautiful beach park that pumps water around a man-made atoll pool to allow swimmers to enjoy fresher ocean water. Technically, it is a city park. However, it has a stunning section of secluded sandy shoreline, making it an ideal place for a quick dip or a sneaky beach day. There are distant views of the Miami skyline, shady palm trees, and scenic flora. Honestly, what’s not to love? If you want a quiet spot for a beach day, Matheson Hammock Park is somewhere you might not initially think of but should absolutely jot down.

It is only 40 minutes from Miami’s Downtown by car. We’d definitely vote that it justifies renting a car, and you can combine it with a visit to the nearby gardens, including Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

    12. Hallandale Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach is a neighborhood in northern Miami with a pristine stretch of white sand and an almost always buzzing community atmosphere. It is one of the most classic ‘residential beach’ choices and has a laid-back but fun vibe. You can rent a beach chair and umbrella and easily kick back on Hallandale Beach for a few hours. And it has that quintessential backdrop of glitzy high-rises famous along Miami beaches.

Hallandale Beach is best reached from Miami Beach and takes just under 40 minutes when driving. You’ll take the scenic stretch of road, heading straight up the coastline and past Miami’s best beaches, including Bal Harbour Beach and Haulover Beach. This means you can quickly turn a visit to Hallandale Beach into a road trip or beach hopping experience.

    13. Crandon Park Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Crandon Park Beach

Crandon Park Beach is beautiful – as in seriously beautiful. This white sand beach is one of the most quiet stretches of shoreline you can find in Miami. This quality makes it one of the best beaches in Miami and an easy addition to this guide. The mixture of soft sand and a peaceful location on Key Biscayne make Crandon Beach a paradise on Earth, let alone just Florida. It has a sought-after residential appeal and is also less known amongst tourists, making it a quiet option that only gets busier in peak seasons.

Crandon Beach is closest to Miami’s Downtown and is just under 20 minutes away by car or an hour by bus. You’ll be crossing the William M Powell Bridge and passing beautiful viewpoints of the Miami skyline and the beautiful Virginia Key – so take your time and allow a whole day to enjoy Crandon Beach despite its convenient location.

    14. Samson Oceanfront Park

Best Beaches in Miami Samson Oceanfront Park

If you are traveling with kids, note Samson Oceanfront Park as one of the best beaches in Miami. While it is not technically just a beach in its own right, this 2.1-acre park has a shaded playground with direct beach access, making it perfect for families visiting Miami. Children can enjoy the playground, a scenic boardwalk suitable for trying out scooters and balance bikes, and vending machines when it’s time for a quick snack. Samson Oceanfront Park even has charging stations and WiFi for parents.

Samson Oceanfront Park is closest to Miami Beach and is located further north on the chain of barrier islands. You can reach the park by bus in 40 minutes or drive there in 30 minutes; either way, you’ll take the scenic coastal route.

    15. Haulover Beach

Best Beaches in Miami Haulover Beach

Haulover Beach is a love-or-hate-it addition to our best beaches in Miami. Officially home to a clothing-optional beach section, Haulover Beach has clearly marked sections where beachgoers can opt between clothing or no clothing. If you want to embrace the nudist lifestyle, Haulover Beach is the best beach in Miami. If you are more conservative, we’d suggest paying close attention to the signposts. Haulover Beach is a classic white sand stretch with plenty of space to find a quiet sunbathing spot, even at peak times.

Haulover Beach is closest to Miami Beach and is located on the barrier island chain off central Miami and the mainland. From Miami Beach, it is just over a 20-minute drive, while it takes around 40 minutes on the bus.

    17. South Beach

Best Beaches in Miami South Beach

South Beach is the famous beach in Miami, backed by the beautiful Lummus Park and Ocean Drive. It is easily one of the most popular beaches in the world – let alone just in Miami. The stunning white sand art deco architecture and beach chair facilities make it an eye-catching spot for a beach day, and has a thriving beach culture.

If you stay near Miami Beach on the barrier island, it is an easy walk to South Beach. South Beach is the hub of Miami’s beach scene and an absolute must-visit.

    18. North Beach

Best Beaches in Miami North Miami Beach

North Beach is easy to love. Better described as mellow than lively like South Beach, North Beach is further up the coastline of the infamous Miami Beach’s chain of shoreline spots. The significant difference is that North Beach is more residential, with green spaces and lowkey parks rather than bursting art deco colors and architecture. If you want South Beach without the intensity and crowds, it is a meeker option while boasting a prime location.

You can easily walk to North Beach while staying centrally on the Miami Barrier Island. It is an accessible beach with a beautiful atmosphere that justifies a place on this list.

Toronto to Niagara Falls by Car

how to get to Niagara from Toronto by car

The journey to Niagara from Toronto by car is straightforward and offers flexibility in terms of stops and detours. This is the way we normally visit Niagara Falls. We like having the luxury of being able to drive to Niagara on the Lake to tour some wineries or to stop in Hamilton or Burlington to do some shopping. If you are driving to Niagara Falls from Toronto, here is the route you’ll want to take.

Route: The most direct route is to take the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) southbound from Toronto.

Duration: The drive typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Tips: Consider using Google Maps or Waze to check for real-time traffic updates and potential delays. Parking is available near the falls, but it can get crowded during peak times and it can be expensive, so arrive early or consider off-site parking options. We find that the most reasonable are the $5 lots that you’ll see on the way in. They promote $5 but it really ends up being $15 for the day. (The $5 signs they hold are for 1 hour.)

  • 28 Best Things to do in Cozumel, Mexico in 2023

28 Best Things to do in Cozumel, Mexico in 2023

Cozumel is a small island paradise, off the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula that we have visited numerous times. Trust me, there are a million reasons to visit Mexico, but to be honest, Cozumel is a reason in its own right. The island is blessed with abundant sea life, providing a mesmerizing insight into the spectacular underwater world. We actually did a lot of SCUBA diving around Cozumel over the years. The Yucatan Peninsula has a stunning mainland atmosphere. However, once you’ve enjoyed all the things to do in Playa del Carmen, it is time to stray off the mainland and embrace island life on Cozumel. There are many cool things to do in Cozumel, from scuba diving to jungle treks and wildlife spotting and we highlight them all here.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel

Top Things to do in Cozumel Mexico

This guide will cover the best things to do in Cozumel – from the many beach clubs to the historic archaeological sites and peaceful views on this beautiful island. Get ready to create the itinerary of a lifetime.

Planning Your Trip To Cozumel Right Now?

Below are some of the top tours in Cozumel. Don’t forget to plan ahead when visiting Mexico!

Top Activities and Tours in Cozumel:

    1. Walk Through San Miguel de Cozumel

Best Things to do in Cozumel San Miguel de Cozumel shops

San Miguel de Cozumel is impossible not to love. The island town is entirely of brightly colored architecture and is Cozumel’s absolute hub of activity. San Miguel is where to head if you want nightlife, infrastructure, and walkable beach bars and restaurants. It is also where you’ll start your Cozumel experience since it is where the major ports and airport is located.

Best Things to do in Cozumel San Miguel de Cozumel coffee shop

To get a taste of the island’s culture and heritage, we’d recommend spending at least 2-3 hours walking downtown San Miguel. You can check out the town square, aka Benito Juarez Park, walk along the beachfront boardwalk, admire graffiti, people-watch in cafes, and enjoy souvenir shopping. Since much of the attractions and infrastructure are scattered around Cozumel, having somewhere with such a density of activity is a pleasant change. And you should definitely allocate time to exploring San Miguel on foot.

    2. Paradise Beach

Best Things to do in Cozumel Paradise Beach resort Aerial

Are you ready to experience the most famous beach club in Cozumel? Paradise Beach Cozumel is a beautiful beach club on the east coast of the island and the perfect place to party in style. The club is all-inclusive, meaning you pay a single upfront fee. Your day pass fee treats you to food, drink, a heated pool, and water equipment. The layout is stunning, with a massive pool, a private beach section, and an inflatable obstacle course in the ocean. If you want somewhere fancy to spend a day, this all-inclusive beach club is the way forward. Paradise Beach Cozumel has an excellent reputation.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Paradise Beach SUP boarding

People say that Cozumel has less of a party scene than Cancun, which is true since it is smaller and less built up. However, Paradise Beach Cozumel is the perfect place to socialize and enjoy in the daytime. You can then return to San Miguel de Cozumel for evening club entertainment. Book your tickets here!

    3. Playa del Carmen

Fun things to do in Cozumel visit Playa del carmen

It is worth mentioning that you don’t just need to stick to things to do on Cozumel itself. One thing worth venturing off the island for is Playa del Carmen, a scenic resort town on mainland Mexico with seven daily ferries running directly to Cozumel. The ferry ride is only 45 minutes one way, meaning you have tons of time to explore the mainland before catching your return ferry. Playa del Carmen has its own archaeological site, planetarium, and cenotes like Cenote Chaak Tun. If you fancy a mainland beach day, you can also just kick back on its beaches.

Playa del Carmen has a bit more buzz about it than Cozumel, which is mostly sleepy with that typical island culture and ‘manana’ atmosphere. It is a great day trip to get a bit of partying in or add some extra attractions to your itinerary – especially if you are flying directly to Cozumel and not traveling down from Cancun for a ferry crossing. If you want to experience nightlife, we suggest booking an overnight stay in Playa del Carmen. But otherwise, a day trip is the perfect way to experience the mainland in a convenient daytime chunk.

    4. Punta Sur Ecological Park

Best Things to do in Cozumel Punta Sur Ecological Beach Park

Punta Sur Ecological Park is easily one of the prettiest Cozumel parks and the best things to do in Cozumel for anyone who loves nature. The state reserve has over 240 acres of coastal lands to venture through and appreciate. It’s home to an abundance of flora and fauna. The park is located at the southern tip of Cozumel. It can be visited as part of a guided organized tour – usually by jeep – or independently since it has numerous hiking trails. You can also take a boat trip to see lagoons and mangroves and even spot crocodiles. Punta Sur has everything from tropical fish to turtles and raccoons. It is also a hotspot for bird watching and a hub for migratory birds stopping for a break in their lengthy journey.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Punta Sur Ecological Beach Park driving

To reach Punta Sur, you must take a taxi or rental car, as public transport is essentially non-existent here. You also pay a single upfront entrance fee of around $20 per person.

    5. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

Best Things to do in Cozumel Playa Mia Grand Beach Park water fun
Photo credit Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is where to go for fun in Cozumel, especially if you visit as a family. The vast section of the beach has water activities and rides galore, ranging from an inflatable obstacle course to waterslides and a pool play park for kids. It is coined as the largest family-friendly beach in Cozumel. It is a water park that meets a beautiful beach resort. And while kids enjoy the play parks and slides, adults can enjoy jet ski rentals and even giggle as they attempt to use water bicycles. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is great fun.

Located on the busy east coast of Cozumel, Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is easy to reach, and plenty of companies offer shuttle services between the park and major resorts. We’d recommend this park over the nearby Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, which keeps dolphins in captivity.

    6. San Gervasio Archeological Site

Best Things to do in Cozumel San Gervasio Archeological Site

San Gervasio Archeological Site is an incredible historical attraction to visit in Cozumel. The site has the largest selection of Mayan ruins on the island and over a dozen individual ruins to explore. The best way to visit the San Gervasio Archeological Site is undoubtedly with a tour guide, as signage is limited, and you don’t get as much insight without a guide. It is a fantastic addition to a Cozumel itinerary and ideal for anyone wanting to learn about Mayan culture and get close to preserved history.

Best Things to do in Cozumel San Gervasio Archeological Site Ruins

As an exciting, novelty side note, the San Gervasio Archeological Site is also home to thousands of iguanas. The iguanas are masters at camouflaging, but there are so many of them that you are bound to see at least a few. If you want to tick off a historical site and wildlife encounter in one go, the San Gervasio Archeological Site is brilliant.

    7. Mayan Cacao Company

Best Things to do in Cozumel Mayan Cacao Company

When you visit Cozumel, tasting the chocolate is a must-do activity. There is no better place to do that than at the Mayan Cacao Company – a small shop and experience attraction on the island’s east coast. Chocolate was created by the Mayans, and this company embraces both the heritage and taste side of this world-loved product by offering tasting sessions as interactive experiences. Visitors can book general admission tickets for the experience or special chocolate workshop tickets for a little more.

The general admission ticket includes a guided tour, tastings, a Mayan purification ritual, and an introduction to Mayan traditions. The workshop gives you all of the above plus the chance to make your own bar of Mayan chocolate. There’s also the chance to complete a chocolate and margarita workshop for extra indulgence. The Mayan Cacao Company is an enjoyable thing to do in Cozumel. You should put this at the top of your itinerary if you have a sweet tooth.

    8. El Caracol Archeological Site

Best things to do in Cozumel El Caracol Archeological Site

El Caracol Archaeological Site is another top contender regarding the best things to do in Cozumel. This site is technically located in Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. Still, it is so beautiful and historically valuable that we are classing it as an attraction in its own right. The Mayan ruins are spectacular in this small site, with unique snail shells studded into the rocks. The ruins are accessible via a boardwalk and are beautifully set against a mangrove and coastal backdrop.

We’d suggest combining El Caracol with a visit to Cozumel’s other southern attractions. You’ll need to rent a car or book taxis to reach this spot, but it is worth the extra effort. It is much quieter than Cozumel’s larger ruins and northern archaeological sites.

    9. Columbia Reef

Best Things to do in Cozumel Columbia Reef corals

You don’t need the Great Barrier Reef to get an insight into the beautiful underwater world. Columbia Reef is Cozumel’s stunning collection of coral reefs, reaching depths of 50 to 90 meters in sections with famously varied underwater landscapes. If you are confident scuba diving, you can explore tunnels, caves, and pinnacle reefs – all while seeing sea turtles, tropical fish, manta rays, and more. It is easily one of Cozumel’s best things to do if you enjoy scuba diving. This reef is frequently rated as one of the world’s best dive sites.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Columbia Reef

You can also snorkel sections of the reef, so don’t worry if you don’t have diving qualifications or experience. Although we’ll cover diving a little later, sit tight if that has spiked your interest.

    10. Jade Cavern

Best Things to do in Cozumel Jade Cavern

Jade Cavern is the next best thing to do in Cozumel. This cenote is beautiful green, with dozens of stalactites adorning the cavern ceiling and a popular cliff jump. It is accessible via guided tours that use offroad jeeps to reach this remote spot. The Mayans believed that cenotes were a connection to the underworld, and cenotes are still sacred in Mexican culture today. Cozumel has limited cenotes, many of which are unsuitable for swimming due to crocodiles. However, Jade Cavern is an excellent option for a Cozumel cenote experience – just book an excursion online.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Jade Cavern diving

It is essential to preserve cenotes and have minimal impact when visiting. Taking an organized trip also means getting insight into cenotes’ cultural and historical significance, not just a refreshing dip and pretty pictures.

    11. Faro de Punta Celarayn

Best Things to do in Cozumel Faro de Punta Celarayn lighthouse

Faro de Punta Celarayn might be located in Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. Still, it is so impressive that it is getting a section of its own. This picturesque lighthouse is located on the southern tip of Cozumel, next to Columbia Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. The colossal white lighthouse has a beautiful viewpoint from the top, and tourists are welcome to climb the spiral stairs and admire the views from the lighthouse’s top-most viewing platform.

If you are visiting this area of Cozumel, detouring to Faro de Punta Celarayn is one of the best things to do on the island. You’ll be treated to fantastic views over the beach park and ocean. Plus, you’ll get an insight into Cozumel’s coastal heritage and architecture.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Faro de Punta Celarayn rental car

This fabulous monument is dedicated to the coral reefs in Cozumel. The monument features two scuba divers ‘exploring’ the reef, swimming towards each other under an arch of coral and surrounded by marine life. At night, the monument lights up spectacularly, and there are water fountains spraying up in a serene display.

    14. Paddleboarding

Best Things to do in Cozumel Paddleboarding

We’ve discussed many water-related activities in Cozumel, but paddleboarding should definitely be on your list. Cozumel is perfect for paddleboarding, which involves kneeling or standing on a huge board – much like a surfboard – and using a paddle to steer yourself sedately along the water. You can rent paddleboards along the Cozumel coastline and make the most of the calm waters.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Paddleboarding Aerial

Paddleboarding is a great, budget-friendly activity and perfect for admiring marine life as you go. You can rent paddleboards and enjoy the experience independently. 15. Deep Sea Fishing

Best Things to do in Cozumel Deep Sea Fishing

Another fabulous activity you should tick off in Cozumel is deep-sea fishing. Deep sea fishing is a bit more of a splurge price-wise, but if you are keen on fishing, it is considered a bucket list activity. Cozumel is also the perfect place to experience deep-sea fishing, thanks to a vast canyon that sits underwater between the island and the mainland. It means you can reach deep sea fishing territory in hardly any time. Budget around $450 for a 4-hour experience and $600 for 8 hours on the water.

The summer is the best time to go deep-sea fishing, as this is when you’ll find large tuna fish. But you can organize deep-sea fishing excursions all year round, so just look and see what tours are available on your dates.

    16. Temazcal Cozumel

Best Things to do in Cozumel Temazcal Cozumel

Experiencing a Temazcal ceremony is one of the most memorable cultural experiences you can possibly have in Cozumel. A Temazcal ceremony is a sacred procedure carried out by a shaman. It involves the cleansing and detoxifying of the body and mind. This is traditionally done through a mixture of hot stones and special herbs, using steam and heat to spread the power and scent of the herbs. Many compare it to a sauna or steam room, with the added benefit of a cultural and spiritual experience.

A Temazcal ceremony is a privilege to experience first-hand and provides a deeper connection with Mexican culture. When you visit Cozumel, this is one of the most memorable and unique things you can do. In Cozumel, the most popular place for a Temazcal ceremony is at Xkanha, which runs for 3 hours for $80 as of 2023-2024. You also have the option to add on a meditative jungle walk.

    17. Atlantis Submarines

Best Things to do in Cozumel Atlantis Submarines Cozumel Crew

Atlantis Submarines is a leading activity in Cozumel, especially if you aren’t confident scuba diving or swimming to see the island’s beautiful surrounding reefs. The submarines dive to depths of 100 feet, taking you up close to the underwater world and beautiful scenery without getting your feet wet. The typical submarine route takes you up close to reefs, a dramatic shipwreck, and allows you to spot animals like sting rays and barracudas.

For non-swimmers and scuba divers, this is a brilliant way of still managing to experience Cozumel’s underwater offerings. The tour aspect of the experience is fantastic, really helping you through the process as an informative experience and making it suitable for adults and children alike. If you want to try something new, a submarine experience with Atlantis Submarines is an excellent idea.

    18. Take a Scuba Diving Course

Best things to do in Cozumel go Scuba Diving

If all that scuba diving earlier sounded incredible, but you don’t have a PADI yet, this section is for you. Why not get your PADI license while holidaying in Cozumel? There are over four different dive schools located on the island, mainly around San Miguel, and these schools offer PADI training courses that typically run over 2-3 days for basic certification. Why not invest in a certificate if staying in Cozumel for a week or more?

You’ll be able to acquire a new skill that you can use elsewhere in the world – like the Great Barrier Reef. You can participate in those scuba diving experiences we mentioned earlier, usually at a discounted rate, if you book the experience with the same operator with whom you obtained your PADI.

    19. Hacienda Antigua

Best Things to do in Cozumel Hacienda Antigua

Hacienda Antigua is a brilliant attraction in Cozumel. The museum is a model of a working tequila factory in Guadalajara and provides visitors with insights into the tequila-making process and tasting experiences. You’ll learn about the three plants that can be used to create tequila, including how long the process takes (hint: a tequila pineapple can take 10 years to suitably mature). For an eye-opening and fun introduction to the world of tequila, Hacienda Antigua is a firm favorite Cozumel attraction.

    20. Mayan Bee Sanctuary

Best Things to do in Cozumel Mayan Bee Sanctuary hive

It doesn’t get more wholesome than a visit to the Mayan Bee Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a haven for Mayan Stingless Bees, aka meliponas or Xunan Cab. These bees are responsible for over 80% of pollination of the forests on the Yucatan Peninsula, including those on Cozumel. At this sanctuary, you take a guided tour to learn more about these incredible creatures and their importance in Mayan history. You’ll get to try out a honey-tasting experience, tour the sanctuary with a guide, learn about Mayan traditions, and even participate in a Mayan purification ritual.

    21. Surf at Chen Rio Beach

Best Things to do in Cozumel Chen Rio Beach

Chen Rio Beach is a whole experience in itself. Located on Cozumel’s wild west coast, it experiences bigger waves thanks to facing the Caribbean Sea. At certain times of the year, it becomes an impressive surfing destination. At these times, you should head to Cozumel Surfing School Nacho to pick up a few new skills or rent a board to show off your existing skillset. As Cozumel’s ‘first and only surf school,’ it carries a huge responsibility. It is an absolute hub for surfers living on and visiting the island.

If you want a surfing experience in Cozumel, this surfing school at Chen Rio Beach is where to head. It is run by a leading surf champion born and raised in Cozumel called Nacho Gutierres.

    22. Take a Food Tour

Take a food tour in Cozumel Mexico

A food tour is a must in Cozumel – you are in Mexico, after all. Cozumel has fantastic authentic Mexican dishes, including the classics like tacos, empanadas, and burritos. It also has fabulous seafood, thanks to its fishermen’s culture. You can book 3-hour food tasting tours and even farm-to-table experiences. As an island, Cozumel is much more connected with its food processes and is impressively resourceful in many ways.

Apart from organized food tours, we’d encourage you to sample as many dishes as possible. Street food in Cozumel is renowned for being delicious as well.

    23. Go Snorkeling

Fun things to do in Cozumel Snorkeling

It might go without saying, but a snorkeling tour is one of Cozumel’s most exciting things to do. You can rent or pack snorkeling gear, go face-to-face with marine life, and independently explore coral reefs. You can find loads of beautiful snorkeling spots located just off of beaches. And these don’t cost you anything to explore if you bring your own gear. Just be mindful of water safety and stick to spots with lifeguards and plenty of others.

If you are at a resort, you might even have a private beach where the resort provides snorkel gear on a complimentary basis. If not, we recommend booking one of the many snorkeling tours that depart from Cozumel. These tours typically provide all necessary gear, food, and drink and take you to harder-to-reach spots.

    24. Passion Island

Best Things to do in Cozumel Passion Island Hammocks

Passion Island, aka Isla de la Pasion, is a natural attraction in Cozumel. The little peninsula is on the northeast coast of the island. It consists of a beautiful white sand beach – one of the only white sand beaches in Cozumel. This tiny paradise is typically quiet and much less visited than other beaches on the island. The scenery is stunning, with extensive lines of palm trees, shallow green-blue waters, and bright white sands. And there are hammocks to enjoy, plus kayak and paddleboard rentals.

To reach Passion Island, you ideally need your own transport, which is partly what keeps this spot quiet. Just drive to Bahia Ciega Bay and park near its ferry terminal. You can then catch the ferry to Passion Island in just 5 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can seek a guided tour, which may offer transfers from San Miguel as part of a group tour.

    25. Cozumel Museum

Best Things to do in Cozumel Cozumel Museum

Cozumel Museum is a beautiful museum entirely dedicated to the island’s history. To get under the island’s skin and connect with its individual story, the Cozumel Museum is the best place to visit and one of the leading attractions. You can view Mayan artifacts and the details on the geographical layout of the island. Thanks to the island’s two major dig sites, the Cozumel Island Museum is also a hotspot for archaeological finds. For such a small place, it really packs a punch, and it is excellent value for money, considering it provides a couple of hours of entertainment at under $10.

Once you’ve finished in the museum, there’s a restaurant with sea views too. You can treat yourself to a meal and decompress after reading fascinating information.

The small farm is family-owned, and tourists can take guided tours of the farm, learning more about pearl harvesting and the challenges pearl harvesters on Cozumel face. It is a really immersive experience – ideal for those wanting a unique cultural experience in Cozumel and anyone with a love for fine jewelry. Cozumel Pearl Farm’s mantra is to show you ‘how much work it takes to wear one single pearl around your neck’.

You can book a guided tour for approximately $140, which includes a guided tour of the farm, snorkeling, a 45-minute boat tour, and lunch. You can also splurge on an overnight experience if you wish for a more in-depth immersion in the local fishermen region of Cozumel.

Best Things to do in Cozumel Catamaran Sunset Tour

A catamaran sunset tour is one of Cozumel’s most classic things to do. Since so much of the island is coastal with beautiful beaches and waterfront scenery, you’d want to admire the island from the water. And with a catamaran tour, you can have a really luxurious experience. Many catamaran excursions are available on Viator, so scroll through and see what sorts of deals you can find.

Catamarans are also a brilliant option for anyone worried about seasickness since the boat’s low and wide design helps reduce motion. This is one of the leading reasons why catamarans are so popular amongst boat party tours and more sedate, relaxing sunset cruises.

You fly into Cancun, enjoy the mainland for as long as you want, and then venture down to Playa del Carmen to catch a 40-minute ferry to Cozumel – costing around $20 as a round trip. The ferries run every hour from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. and are a reliable, budget-friendly option.

And when you’ve decided on the best area, you still need to choose the best accommodation. Mexico has a reputation for having the best all-inclusive resorts, and Cozumel has a fair share of its own. These are the best accommodation choices in Cozumel per budget.

The island is small, and you can quickly get between different attractions on cheap guided tours – contributing positively to the local economy and reducing omissions. There are also collectivos, essentially minivans, that act like buses and run a public transportation system.

Still, if you want the freedom of exploring on your own wheels, car rentals are cheap in Cozumel. This way, you can visit more secluded beach choices and attractions without worrying about transport timings. You can find car rentals all over San Miguel de Cozumel, where the airport is.

However, if you are happy with the trade-off, the cheapest rates, thanks to these periods, make up Cozumel’s off-season.

You should also be aware that June to November is hurricane season in this region. While it has been around 20 years since Cozumel was last severely impacted by a hurricane, it can affect your travel to and from the island.

So, when is the best time to visit Cozumel? February to April is the best chunk of time. At this time of year, you’ll see an average of around 86 Fahrenheit and get plenty of dry weather to kick back in pools and sunbathe on white sand beaches.

Tips for Northern Lights Viewing In Ontario

Tips for viewing the Northern Lights in Ontario

Considering weather conditions and ideal viewing times is a surefire way to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Ontario. Cold, clear nights provide the best opportunities for witnessing the aurora borealis. The months from November to March are prime time for viewing, as the sun sets earlier and the nights are longer and darker.

So, you are planning to chase the Northern Lights? Great! Remember, the place you choose should be away from the city lights. And don’t forget to keep an eye on your surroundings. It’s also a good idea to check the local weather forecast. You know, things like cloud cover, whether it’s going to rain or not, the phase of the moon, and of course, the aurora forecast.

All these factors can make or break your Northern Lights experience. But hey, don’t worry too much. Just be patient, wait for the right conditions, and I promise, you are in for a treat. Experiencing the Northern Lights is truly unforgettable.

Northern Ontario’s Hidden Gems for Aurora Viewing

A remote location in Northern Ontario with no light pollution

Northern Ontario is a treasure trove of hidden gems for aurora viewing, offering both pristine conditions and unique experiences. We now shift our focus to some lesser-known locations in Northwestern Ontario that are fantastic vantage points to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights. These include North Bay, Cochrane, Moosonee, and Chapleau.

    6. North Bay

North Bay is a city located in northeastern Ontario. It is a great destination for viewing the Northern Lights. With its numerous outdoor trails, landmarks, and live entertainment options, North Bay offers a fantastic destination for aurora enthusiasts. Some of the best places to witness the Northern Lights in North Bay include the waterfront and the provincial parks around the town.

The best time to visit North Bay for Northern Lights viewing is between September and November, with the optimal viewing hours between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. The Fred McNutt Family Trail and the Richardson Ridge Trails provide excellent vantage points for admiring the dazzling aurora borealis display in the night sky.

    7. Cochrane and Moosonee

Cochrane and Moosonee offer great opportunities for aurora viewing, thanks to their picturesque landscapes and scenic train rides. Cochrane is known for its fantastic Northern Lights viewing conditions, as it’s far away from light pollution. Moosonee, one of the northernmost towns in northeastern Ontario, is easily accessible by train and offers stunning views of the Moose River and James Bay.

For a truly local experience, consider staying at Moosonee Lilypad or The Sunflower Guesthouse, or camp at Tidewater Provincial Park. These charming accommodations provide a cozy base for your Northern Lights adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the aurora borealis.

    8. Chapleau

Chapleau, a small town with historic significance and the largest wildlife preserve on the planet, is an ideal location for Northern Lights viewing. Established in 1885 as a connection point for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Hudson’s Bay Company Trading Post, Chapleau has evolved into a hub for mining, lumbering, and other industries. Its northern positioning and lack of light pollution make it a perfect spot to witness the Northern Lights.

The best time to visit Chapleau for Northern Lights viewing is between October and late March.

Tips for Capturing the Perfect Northern Lights Photo

A stunning image of the northern lights in Ontario, with vibrant green and purple hues illuminating the night sky

Capturing the perfect Northern Lights photo can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. The key to success lies in adjusting your camera settings and experimenting with composition. To get the best shots, follow these steps:

    1. Set your aperture (f-stop) to at least f4 or f2.8 for a wide lens opening.
    2. Go manual and set focus to infinity.
    3. Adjust your ISO and shutter speed accordingly.
    4. Use evaluative or matrix metering mode to ensure proper exposure.
    5. Include something or someone in the foreground for better composition.

Choosing the right camera and lens is also crucial for photographing the Northern Lights. Some great options for cameras include:

Wide-angle lenses with a minimum aperture of f/2.8 – f/4 are ideal for capturing the aurora borealis and the surrounding landscape. You are also going to want to have a solid tripod. With the right equipment and settings, you’ll be well on your way to capturing stunning images of the mesmerizing Northern Lights.

Preparing for Your Northern Lights Adventure

A person preparing for a Northern Lights adventure in Ontario

Before you head out on your Northern Lights adventure, it’s important to be well-prepared. One thing to keep in mind is that the best viewing conditions usually happen on cold, clear nights, so dressing appropriately is a must. Here’s what you should consider wearing:

You can’t go wrong with wool clothing. Think wool beanie, winter boots, wool socks, a wool sweater, long wool underwear, and mittens. We recommend Merino Wool, it not only keeps you warm but it keeps you dry. Cotton, on the other hand, isn’t the best choice because it won’t keep you warm. Also, don’t forget to bring extra layers and blankets to keep you cozy.

Safety is another thing you should be thinking about when planning your Northern Lights trip. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Try to pick a viewing spot that’s free of light pollution. Always be aware of your surroundings. And don’t forget to check the local weather forecast for cloud cover, precipitation, moon phase, and the aurora forecast to make sure you’ve got the best viewing conditions possible.

By getting everything ready in advance, you’ll be all set to fully enjoy your unforgettable aurora adventure.
